Guitou Town Wetland Park, designed by YXDesigners, is a transformative ecological project situated in Guitou Town, Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province. This ambitious initiative redefines the relationship between human settlements and wetlands, turning a frequently flooded, eroded landscape into a thriving nature-based public space.
The project emerged through a strategic collaboration with Vanke Urban Research Institute, which recognized the potential of this neglected wetland along the Wujiang River. Once considered an unusable wilderness, the site’s rich biodiversity, native vegetation, and stunning mountain-water landscapes offered an opportunity to create a sustainable, flood-resilient wetland park that benefits both the environment and local communities.


Adaptive Design: Flood-Resilient Strategies
Transforming Challenges into Opportunities
Guitou Town experiences significant seasonal flooding, with water levels fluctuating up to 4 meters between seasons. Conventional flood-control strategies such as hard embankments severed the town’s connection to the river, limiting public engagement with the natural landscape. YXDesigners approached this challenge by implementing resilient landscape architecture that works with natural hydrological patterns rather than against them.
The park incorporates:
- Riprap reinforcement to stabilize the floodplain and prevent soil erosion
- Multi-elevation boardwalks built with durable, low-maintenance materials to ensure accessibility year-round
- Flood-adaptive infrastructure, allowing the park to remain functional even during peak water levels
By integrating sustainable flood management techniques, the design preserves the wetland’s ecological functions while creating immersive spaces for visitors to engage with the rhythms of nature.



Blending Architecture with Ecology
Human-Made Structures in Harmony with Nature
The architectural components of Guitou Town Wetland Park seamlessly blend into the surrounding environment. The entrance complex and public plaza feature a minimalist silhouette, strategically framing expansive views of the landscape. Elevated pathways provide uninterrupted access to the riverfront, ensuring resilience against seasonal floods.
Key Features of the Park’s Design:
- Elevated Boardwalk System – A continuous walkway along the Wujiang River provides panoramic views, with a colonnade underneath functioning as a sheltered promenade.
- Cantilevered Observation Decks – Inspired by local stilt-house vernacular, these decks extend from the boardwalk, enhancing the visual and interactive experience.
- Starlight Bridge – At dusk, the boardwalk transforms into an illuminated pathway with embedded luminous inlays, evoking a celestial ambiance.
- Detention Basins – Three strategically placed basins transition into ephemeral wetland gardens, supporting semi-aquatic plant communities.
By prioritizing low-impact construction and minimal earthwork, the design preserves existing topographies and habitats, reinforcing the symbiotic relationship between human infrastructure and nature.

- Looped jogging and walking trails traverse the wetlands, doubling as wildlife observation corridors
- Interactive environmental education stations, created from repurposed construction pilings, serve as outdoor classrooms for Guitou Primary School
- Seasonal pavilions function as camping hubs and kayak docks, enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities
- Ecologically engineered riprap revetments have become a popular area for fishing and wildlife interaction
