Nestled in a recently rezoned residential area of Kobe, Japan, the House in Inagawa-cho by FujiwaraMuro Architects exemplifies thoughtful modern residential architecture. Completed in 2024 and spanning 116 m², this project showcases a meticulous balance between spatial creativity, site-specific optimization, and personalized client needs. Photographed by Katsuya Taira (studioREM), the house has quickly become a reference for innovative, contemporary Japanese homes.

Triangular Roof and South-Oriented Design
The client requested a distinctive architectural form that fully utilizes the south-facing orientation of the site. In response, the architects designed a triangular roof, giving the house a striking, recognizable silhouette. By rotating the building approximately 45 degrees toward the south, the design maximizes natural light, enhances three-dimensional depth, and emphasizes the structure’s presence within the neighborhood.

Dynamic Volumetric Layout
Instead of relying on a single monolithic volume, the design treats each room as an individual volume, creating dynamic collisions between spaces. This approach not only optimizes the irregular rectangular site and complies with setback regulations but also ensures that every room has a unique spatial character. As residents move through the house, they experience subtle spatial changes, enhancing daily living with a sense of fluidity and exploration.

Music Room Integration
A core requirement for the client was a music room for band practice with friends and family. Due to budget constraints, full-scale soundproofing was not feasible. FujiwaraMuro Architects ingeniously addressed this by encasing the music room within adjacent volumes, naturally enhancing acoustic separation and providing a comfortable environment for creative expression.

Interior Design and Materiality
The interiors emphasize warmth and texture, featuring wooden finishes that create an inviting atmosphere while maintaining minimalist sophistication. The thoughtful interplay of light, shadow, and volume contributes to a harmonious living experience, seamlessly blending aesthetics with functionality.

Optimized Use of Site and Regulations
By rotating the house and adjusting each volume individually, the architects effectively utilized the entire site, avoiding wasted space and adhering to local zoning and setback regulations. This careful planning demonstrates how contemporary Japanese architecture can harmonize with both client needs and urban constraints.

The House in Inagawa-cho stands as a testament to the power of innovative residential architecture, blending distinctive form, volumetric spatial play, and functional design tailored to lifestyle and site.
