HOUSE OF JAZZ
Design a Jazz Performance Center for the Bronx, New York.
Functional: How does the design function successfully as a valuable performative space?
The size of the stage is designed based on the form of a small jazz band, and different from the usual performing space,we add a new dimension for acting and watching to create a 3D hearing feeling. In this way, there is a unity between hearing and watching in this particular space structure.
We combine the space with jazz’s intro, main tone, freestyle and coda.Through the little circle window at the entrance’s vertical wall,we can see the inside of the building, which represent the intro. From the door to the stage,we darken the atmosphere with black walls to make a transaction to the open space which stand for the main tone. With the performers’ freestyle, the stage will spin and raise, which bring the music to the highest part .This represent the freestyle part. The circle window on the north wall can be lighted up,and the coda present by the light with the coming-end music extend and reflect to the outside lawn.
Public: How does the space create public engagement for visitors beyond performances?
Behind the audience on the first floor, there are instruments and jazz discs to sell and exhibit. In this way ,audience with interest can purchase them.On the second floor, there’s an area for exhibition about jazz-book and discs. When there are no performing, this part can be used as rehearsing and teaching.Besides, with the stage spinning and raising, audiences can be closer to the performers in some particular time.In the annular space, unsettled sites can not only bring centrality to the audiences but also can stimulate communications between audiences.
Future: How do the space and its design translate even as the music constantly changes through time?
The outside of the building has a stable and firm out-looking.The interior is designed to make a space with innervation and adjustment. And at the bottom of the spinning stairs, there are signatures from different classical jazz player from different time.As the space spinning and raising, this part can give the players a chance to leave theirs as well where they can leave their personal mark. Two curving walls full with pictures, posters and paintings keep the beautiful memories from jazz players and hobbyist from different period of time.Around the stage and on the stairs, adjustable reflecting glitters came up to a jazz music score. In this way, you can choose your own favorite music score to show or even write one.
