The Genesis of Itomachi Hotel 0

The journey to Itomachi Hotel 0 began in 2016 with the KENGO KUMA LABORATORY at the University of Tokyo. The lab embarked on a mission to create a master plan for new environmentally-friendly cities, with a focus on the vital element of water. This initiative, known as the "Itomachi Project," involved close cooperation with local partners, workshops with residents, architectural competitions for young architects, and the establishment of the Itomachi network. This network aimed to foster a new age of lifestyle post-coronavirus pandemic, emphasizing solutions to global environmental challenges.

Architectural and Environmental Harmony

The Itomachi Hotel 0 is a marvel of architectural design and environmental integration. With an area of 2996 m² and completed in 2023, the project showcases the seamless blend of natural elements and modern architecture. The hotel is divided into two main sections: the reception wing, open to the community, and the lodging wing. Between these two wings lies the hotel's heart—a large garden fed by the pure "Uchinuki" well water. This garden serves multiple purposes: an outdoor living room, a performance space for events, and a camp yard, redefining the hotel experience through the concept of a "garden."

Sustainability at Its Core

Sustainability is at the core of Itomachi Hotel 0's design philosophy. As a Zero Energy building, it represents a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the hospitality industry. The use of natural resources, such as the "Uchinuki" well water, not only enhances the hotel's sustainability but also connects guests with the local environment and culture. The involvement of Dugout Architects in interior design, Cool Design, LTD in construction, and Kankyo Engineering INC among others in facility engineering, alongside Spangle in lighting design, underscores the collaborative effort to achieve environmental harmony.
