In 2023, Studioninedots unveiled Karper K Workplace, a bold adaptive reuse project that transformed an outdated warehouse in Amsterdam South into a dynamic coworking and cultural hub for makers, designers, and innovators. Spanning 985 m², this workspace is not just an office but a creative ecosystem designed for collaboration, experimentation, and community impact.

From Temporary Workspace to Permanent Creative Landmark

Since early 2022, Studioninedots had been seeking a new home to replace their temporary base, Creative Workspace 1-1-1 in Amsterdam North. The search ended at Karperweg, one of the last urban fringes of the city, where they discovered an unassuming warehouse with hidden potential — raw, spacious, and perfectly suited for a collaborative design transformation.

Eight other creative offices joined the move, bringing with them a spirit of cross-disciplinary innovation. The goal was clear: maintain the industrial authenticity of the building while creating an open, adaptable environment that fosters creativity.

Design Concept — Preserving Rawness, Encouraging Exchange

The new Karper K Workplace was envisioned as more than just a headquarters. It is a “free space” — a safe, experimental zone where unexpected encounters and unpredictable collaborations can flourish.

Studioninedots retained the industrial rawness of the original site, allowing the space’s imperfections to inspire a sparking atmosphere. The layout encourages transparency and interaction, with different companies working side-by-side in an airy, light-filled environment.

A central Free Space hall connects the work zones, serving as an adaptable venue for cultural events, exhibitions, material testing, and night gatherings. The high windows at the street-facing maker space create a visual connection with the neighborhood, turning the building into a showcase for creativity.

Material Palette & Spatial Identity

Unity is at the heart of the design. Walls, cabinetry, and even original structural relics are finished in a uniform, soft grey, providing a calm backdrop that allows colorful furniture and seating elements to bring vibrancy and character.

A full-length cabinet wall serves as both a storage and display system for material samples, architectural models, and intimate meeting nooks. Indirect natural light streams in through the shed roofs, giving the entire floor a bright, diffused glow.

Sustainable Redevelopment

Karper K Workplace is not just a creative hub — it is also a model of sustainable renovation. The building features:

  • Photovoltaic panels on the roof for renewable energy generation.
  • Two air heat pump systems for energy-efficient climate control.
  • Underfloor heating and cooling for optimal thermal comfort.

These interventions make Karper K a future-ready workplace that aligns with the city’s climate goals.

A Cultural Asset for Amsterdam

In a city where affordable, safe creative spaces are disappearing, Karper K Workplace represents a beacon for collaboration. It offers a platform for makers, artists, and designers to connect, exchange ideas, and bring projects to life.
