Located in the historic town of Besalú, Spain, the LC House by Sau Taller d’Arquitectura represents a refined balance between modern design, environmental responsibility, and contextual sensitivity. Designed by Lluis Jordà and Pol Jordà, this 184 m² residence prioritizes both sustainability and spatial efficiency, redefining what a contemporary timber home can achieve in harmony with its landscape.

Thoughtful Site Placement and Spatial Configuration

The house is positioned at the northern edge of the plot, adjacent to the access road, to maximize southern exposure and liberate garden space. This orientation not only captures panoramic views but also enhances passive solar gain throughout the year.

With a compact square plan measuring 9.3 x 9.3 meters, the design ensures maximum efficiency and clarity. The balloon-frame timber structure, supported by four central columns, defines four 15 m² corner zones organized around two vertical service cores. The result is a cruciform layout that seamlessly integrates functionality, structural simplicity, and openness.

Climatic Performance and Passive Design Principles

Every design decision in LC House stems from climatic reasoning and ecological restraint. The form factor references the archetypal house shape, allowing for maximum internal volume with minimal surface area, which improves thermal efficiency and reduces heat loss.

A series of passive environmental strategies further enhance comfort and energy performance:

  • Ventilated crawlspace for moisture control and thermal insulation
  • Underfloor heating system for uniform warmth
  • Cross ventilation in all rooms for natural cooling
  • South-facing openings to capture sunlight
  • Ventilated façades and roof to maintain stable indoor temperatures

Together, these strategies create a healthier, low-energy home that performs exceptionally in all seasons.

Timber Construction and Circular Sustainability

At the heart of the project is a modular timber structure — chosen for its low environmental impact, renewable nature, and warm aesthetic. Prefabricated and assembled through dry construction methods, the building minimizes on-site waste and carbon emissions.

This construction logic extends beyond completion: the materials and components are recyclable and reusable, ensuring the building’s life cycle remains circular and environmentally responsible. The approach reflects a clear architectural ethos — one that embraces efficiency, sustainability, and adaptability.

A Model for Contemporary Sustainable Living

The LC House is more than a compact family home — it’s a prototype for responsible architecture in the Mediterranean context. Through intelligent planning, passive performance, and renewable materials, Sau Taller d’Arquitectura demonstrates how small-scale design can embody big ecological impact.

From its rigorous environmental logic to its serene, light-filled interiors, LC House stands as a model for contemporary architecture that is both human-centered and future-ready.
