Reconnecting Shanghai Through Urban Regeneration Architecture
Live Towards The River is an urban regeneration architecture proposal that reconsiders the relationship between dense neighbourhoods, fragmented infrastructure and the waterfront of Suzhou Creek in central Shanghai.
Designed by Chi Zhang, the project introduces a network of parasitic architectural interventions across the existing urban fabric. Rather than replacing established buildings or imposing a singular megastructure, the proposal works through selective additions, pedestrian links and small public programmes that respond directly to the conditions of each riverbank.
The project was recognised as a shortlisted entry of Parasitic Architecture 2020. Its central ambition is to reorganise the city toward the river while connecting high-density communities with public space, essential facilities and new opportunities for social interaction.


Understanding the Contrasting Riverbanks of Suzhou Creek
Suzhou Creek passes through a dense and complex section of Shanghai where the urban conditions on either side of the water differ significantly.
The western bank is characterised by traditional neighbourhoods, compact residential patterns and a shortage of public space. Its density supports active community life, yet the area lacks many of the facilities required for comfortable everyday use.
The eastern bank, in contrast, forms part of Shanghai’s central business district. It contains more formally planned infrastructure and larger buildings, but it also includes underused setbacks, disconnected open areas and residual spaces with limited public value.
Live Towards The River begins with the observation that these two sides are spatially and programmatically complementary. One side possesses established community life but lacks space and amenities. The other contains greater spatial resources but suffers from inactivity and fragmentation.
The design therefore treats the river not as a dividing edge, but as the centre of a broader urban regeneration architecture strategy.
A Parasitic Layer Over the Existing City
The proposal introduces a new spatial layer that attaches to, passes through and connects existing structures. This parasitic system does not attempt to erase the present city. It uses the existing building stock, circulation networks and infrastructural conditions as its host.
The intervention includes pedestrian paths, bridges, elevated platforms, infill structures and compact programme boxes. Together, these additions form a continuous network that improves accessibility between neighbourhoods and creates new destinations along the waterfront.
This approach reflects a central principle of parasitic architecture: the host remains recognisable, but its capacity is expanded through an additional structure.
In Live Towards The River, parasitic architecture becomes a practical urban tool rather than a purely formal gesture. It supplies missing facilities, supports new uses and reorganises movement across a much larger district.
From Disconnected Roads to a Pedestrian Network
The existing vehicular infrastructure separates many neighbourhoods from the river. Major roads, fragmented plots and restricted waterfront access prevent pedestrians from moving comfortably between the city and the creek.
The project responds through a four-stage urban strategy:
Disconnect
The initial condition identifies roads, blocks and riverfront areas that are physically separated from one another.
Connect
Secondary pedestrian routes are introduced to link neighbourhood streets with the waterfront and with public destinations on both riverbanks.
Infill
Commercial functions, civic amenities and community facilities are inserted into underused urban spaces. These additions help activate the ground plane and support continuous pedestrian movement.
Loop
The pedestrian system is organised into six interconnected loops. Each loop responds to the programme, density and identity of its immediate surroundings.
This progression transforms isolated urban fragments into a legible network. Movement becomes more direct, public facilities become easier to reach and the river gains a stronger relationship with everyday city life.
Six Pedestrian Loops Shaped by Urban Context
The strategy plan divides the intervention into six pedestrian loops. Rather than repeating a standard architectural solution, each loop responds to nearby institutions, commercial areas, residential communities and transport connections.
Loop 1: Art and Creativity
The first loop links creative communities and cultural destinations, including the nearby Shanghai Natural History Museum. It supports artistic activity through public platforms, exhibition spaces and informal gathering areas.
Loop 2: Art and Creativity
The second loop continues the cultural programme while connecting surrounding neighbourhoods to shopping facilities, public transport and the creek.
Loop 3: Garments and Offices
This section engages with the existing garment industry and office uses. New pedestrian routes help connect workplaces, commercial programmes and riverfront spaces.
Loop 4: Garments and Offices
The fourth loop extends this mixed-use network through additional infill structures, pedestrian crossings and public amenities.
Loop 5: Tourism and Culture
Closer to major cultural attractions and waterfront destinations, the fifth loop supports visitors through clearer circulation, public space and temporary cultural programmes.
Loop 6: Tourism and Culture
The final loop connects the district toward the Bund, nearby libraries and other metropolitan destinations. It reinforces the creek as part of a broader cultural and tourism network.
Together, the six loops establish a connected public realm extending across both sides of Suzhou Creek.
Mixed Land Use as an Urban Regeneration Tool
One of the project’s most significant ideas is the deliberate mixing of programmes.
Existing neighbourhoods often separate residential, commercial and institutional uses into isolated zones. Live Towards The River challenges this condition by placing small public and commercial functions directly along pedestrian routes.
These programmes may include restrooms, movable grocery units, pocket parks, pop-up libraries, small retail spaces and community facilities.
The interventions are modest in scale, but their combined effect is substantial. They encourage pedestrians to remain in public space, create reasons to cross the river and bring activity to previously neglected locations.
This programme-based approach allows urban regeneration architecture to operate incrementally. Each component responds to a specific deficiency, while the larger network reorganises the relationship between neighbourhoods.

Micro-Regeneration at an Urban Scale
Conventional micro-regeneration projects frequently consist of isolated additions attached to individual buildings. While these interventions may improve specific sites, they do not always address wider patterns of fragmentation.
Live Towards The River connects multiple typologies into a coordinated system.
The small architectural units are designed as components of a larger pedestrian network. Their value lies not only in the individual functions they provide, but also in their ability to link spaces, direct movement and establish continuity across the district.
This creates a shift from isolated micro-interventions to networked urban regeneration.
The project demonstrates how small-scale architecture can influence a much larger urban context when each intervention is strategically positioned and connected.
Architecture That Responds to the Existing Host
The structural feasibility of the proposal is closely tied to the existing buildings.
The design considers the beam grids and structural logic of the host architecture when locating new platforms and programmes. The physical model shows how the proposed parasitic layer intersects with existing buildings without completely replacing them.
The size of each intervention responds to the width of surrounding roads, available structural support and the scale of adjacent urban blocks.
Daylight is also considered when determining the height and placement of the additions. This helps reduce excessive shading while maintaining a comfortable relationship between new structures and the existing city.
The proposal therefore balances architectural experimentation with a clear awareness of construction, access and environmental performance.
Prefabricated and Adaptable Construction
The material strategy includes prefabricated slabs, timber and solar panels.
Prefabrication supports the incremental nature of the proposal. Components can be manufactured efficiently, transported to individual sites and assembled with limited disruption to the surrounding neighbourhood.
Timber introduces a lightweight structural and architectural material that can be adapted across bridges, platforms, enclosures and public spaces.
Solar panels contribute to the environmental performance of the system by allowing selected structures to generate renewable energy for lighting or small public programmes.
These materials reinforce the concept of a flexible parasitic toolkit. The architecture is not conceived as one permanent, monolithic object. It is a system capable of being adjusted according to different sites and programme requirements.
Public Space as Essential Urban Infrastructure
Live Towards The River treats public space as more than leftover land between buildings.
In dense neighbourhoods, open space, rest facilities and accessible pedestrian routes are essential forms of urban infrastructure. They influence mobility, community interaction, health and the quality of everyday life.
The project introduces pocket parks, libraries, commercial kiosks and shared platforms into areas where such facilities are currently absent or difficult to access.
On the western bank, these additions support established neighbourhoods by providing necessary amenities.
On the eastern bank, they activate underused areas around commercial buildings and transform negative space into a more welcoming public realm.
The result is a reciprocal relationship in which each side of the river contributes spatial and social resources to the other.
Parasitic Architecture as an Agent of Social Change
The social potential of the project operates at two scales.
At the local scale, the parasitic interventions provide practical facilities for residents. Restrooms, grocery units, pocket parks and libraries improve the daily usability of dense neighbourhoods.
At the urban scale, the connected pedestrian system challenges the social isolation created by roads, land-use divisions and the river itself.
By creating more destinations and more direct routes, the proposal encourages people to cross between neighbourhoods that might otherwise remain separate.
The architecture becomes a framework for exchange. Residents, office workers, tourists and local businesses are brought into closer contact through a shared public network.
This is where the project’s concept of social change becomes most persuasive. Instead of relying on one iconic public building, it distributes social infrastructure across the city.
Living Toward the River
The title Live Towards The River expresses a fundamental change in urban orientation.
In many parts of the site, neighbourhoods and buildings turn away from Suzhou Creek. Roads and inaccessible plots reinforce the waterfront as a boundary.
The project reverses this condition by directing paths, programmes and public life toward the water.
The river becomes a connective landscape that supports recreation, culture, commerce and mobility. It is no longer approached only as scenery or infrastructure, but as a shared civic space.
This shift also strengthens the identity of Suzhou Creek as an important element within Shanghai’s urban experience.
A Flexible Model for Dense Cities
Although the proposal is rooted in the specific conditions of Shanghai, its methodology has wider relevance.
Many rapidly developing cities contain a similar combination of high-density neighbourhoods, business districts, residual urban land and disconnected waterfronts.
Live Towards The River demonstrates how these conditions might be addressed without extensive demolition.
Its parasitic toolkits offer a flexible alternative based on reuse, addition and connection. Existing buildings remain in place while new programmes are introduced where they are most necessary.
This reduces the need for complete redevelopment and allows transformation to occur gradually.
The project therefore presents urban regeneration architecture as an adaptive process shaped by existing communities and structures.
A Network Rather Than a Singular Object
The architectural model clearly communicates the project’s principal gesture. A continuous coloured route passes through and around a varied collection of existing buildings.
This route is not simply a bridge or corridor. It expands into rooms, terraces, public platforms and programme spaces.
At some points, the intervention attaches to large commercial structures. Elsewhere, it passes over smaller industrial buildings or connects open areas along the river.
The resulting form reflects the complexity of the city itself. There is no single architectural language imposed across every site. Instead, the network changes according to local conditions while preserving its identity as a connected system.
