Urban waterfronts are increasingly confronted with the pressures of climate change, rising sea levels, and evolving urban density. In response to these challenges, contemporary architecture must develop strategies that combine resilience, public engagement, and programmatic flexibility. Looped Hybrid: Cultural Loop Within Three Towers explores a climate adaptive mixed use architecture model positioned along the Miami Riverfront. The project, designed by Pengcheng Sun and Shunfan Zheng, proposes a superblock composed of three high rise towers linked through a continuous cultural loop that integrates public programs within the vertical city.
Rather than treating towers as isolated residential or commercial enclaves, the design introduces a hybrid architectural system where public life, circulation, and cultural activities become spatial drivers of the project. By connecting three towers through elevated platforms and a looping public pathway, the proposal transforms a conventional mixed use development into an urban condenser that encourages interaction between private and public spaces.


Climate Adaptive Urban Context
Miami sits at the frontline of global climate change, particularly with the threat of sea level rise and coastal flooding. The project responds to this environmental reality by rethinking the relationship between architecture, water, and urban infrastructure. Located along the Miami River Walk corridor, the proposal situates itself at a critical point within the city's waterfront development strategy.
The architecture operates on an undulating podium landscape that accommodates multiple water level scenarios. Instead of resisting water through rigid boundaries, the design accepts fluctuation and integrates flexible spatial layers that can function under different environmental conditions. Public platforms and elevated cultural programs allow the architecture to remain active even during high water levels, ensuring long term adaptability.
Through this approach, the project demonstrates how climate adaptive architecture can become an active participant in shaping resilient urban environments.
The Superblock Concept
At the core of the project is the concept of a hybrid superblock. The development consists of three vertical towers sitting atop a sculpted podium that houses parking, infrastructure, and public access points. Above this base, a sequence of platforms and bridges creates a looping circulation system that moves horizontally and vertically through the towers.
This loop acts as a public cultural spine that connects different programmatic elements across the complex. Galleries, collaborative spaces, sky amenities, cafes, and cultural platforms are distributed along this path. Instead of concentrating public activities at the ground level, the architecture distributes them vertically across the towers.
The result is a spatial system that transforms vertical development into an accessible urban landscape.
The Cultural Loop
The defining feature of the project is the cultural loop, a continuous pathway that navigates through the three towers and connects a series of public platforms at different heights. This loop acts simultaneously as circulation infrastructure and as a public destination.
Visitors can move along the loop to experience a sequence of spaces that include galleries, collaborative workspaces, viewing platforms, cafes, and sky amenities. Each platform acts as a cultural node that attracts activity and visual engagement.
By elevating public programs into the towers, the architecture challenges the conventional "tower on podium" typology common in contemporary urban developments. Instead of isolating private and public realms, the loop allows these two domains to intersect, generating a layered urban experience.
Public and Private Spatial Strategy
A key principle of the design is the relationship between public and private spaces. The project defines two primary user groups: the public users of the loop and the private occupants of the tower modules.
Residential units, offices, hotel programs, and campus facilities are organized within modular tower blocks. These modules vary in size and configuration, creating a diverse range of living and working environments. Each module maintains its privacy while maintaining visual and spatial proximity to the cultural loop.
The loop itself acts as a mediator between these two domains. It introduces controlled moments where public and private activities intersect, fostering a sense of shared urban experience while maintaining functional separation.


Micro to Macro Design System
The spatial organization of the project emerges from a micro to macro design methodology. At the smallest scale, the design begins with basic geometric forms such as triangles, circles, squares, and stars. These elemental shapes inform the development of small scale activity spaces that serve as catalysts for social interaction.
These micro elements are then integrated into the macro structure of the loop. As the loop moves through the towers and across different platforms, these forms generate spatial events such as crossover points, gathering areas, and vertical circulation nodes.
This approach creates a public condenser where architectural form actively stimulates social mixing and public engagement.
Spatial Experience and Interior Environment
The interior environments reinforce the concept of openness and connectivity. Collaborative spaces, cafes, and galleries are arranged around vertical voids that allow visual continuity across multiple floors. Curving staircases and transparent partitions encourage movement and exploration.
The collaborative core within the towers becomes a central spatial feature. Here, large atriums and spiral circulation elements create dramatic interior spaces where work, leisure, and cultural activities intersect. Natural daylight penetrates deep into the building through large glazed surfaces and vertical openings, enhancing the spatial experience.
This interior strategy ensures that the loop remains visible and accessible throughout the architecture, reinforcing the idea of continuous public engagement.
Programmatic Diversity
The three towers accommodate a wide range of programs including residential units, office spaces, hotel accommodations, and shared campus environments. The modular matrix allows these functions to coexist within a unified structural framework.
