M Residence by TAKATINA: A Serene Mid-Century Renovation in the Hudson Valley
A serene Hudson Valley renovation blending mid-century structure, warm materials, abundant daylight, and refined contemporary living within a wooded landscape.
Nestled within a seven-acre wooded landscape in Accord, New York, M Residence is a carefully crafted residential renovation by TAKATINA LLC that transforms a mid-century house from the 1980s into a calm, contemporary retreat. Surrounded by the bucolic terrain of the Hudson Valley, the project balances modern living with the preservation of rustic character, offering a refined response to its natural context.
Commissioned by a creative couple seeking a complete gut renovation and addition, the project reimagines the existing structure to better support their lifestyle while celebrating their collection of modern furniture and art. TAKATINA’s approach focuses on restraint, material warmth, and spatial clarity, allowing architecture, light, and landscape to work in quiet harmony.

Material Warmth and Tactile Interiors
At the heart of the renovation is a deep respect for the original structure. The existing exposed wood framing on the ground floor was preserved and celebrated, becoming a defining architectural feature. New finishes were selected for their tactile softness and visual warmth, reinforcing the home’s retreat-like atmosphere.
Century-old reclaimed terracotta tiles with integrated floor heating ground the interior spaces, while warm white walls and restored wood ceilings provide a calm, neutral backdrop. Ribbon windows wrap the house, delivering a continuous wash of natural light throughout the day and reinforcing the connection between interior spaces and the surrounding forest.

A Central Living Space Anchored by Craft
The open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area is anchored by a twelve-foot-long custom island that functions as both a social and spatial centerpiece. Finished in honey-stained rift-cut oak veneer and topped with a limestone countertop, the island integrates a sculptural Vola faucet and a PITT cooking system, merging precision craftsmanship with everyday functionality.
This central space exemplifies TAKATINA’s design philosophy, where architectural restraint allows materials, proportions, and light to take precedence. The result is an interior that feels effortless yet deeply considered, supporting both daily life and creative expression.

Light, Privacy, and Spatial Atmosphere
In the guest bathroom, a floor-to-ceiling ribbed glass panel filters daylight while maintaining privacy. As light moves through the space, reflections and shadows animate the wood wainscoting, creating a subtle, ever-changing atmosphere. These moments of sensory engagement recur throughout the home, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on calm, immersive living.

Reimagined Master Suite and Rooftop Garden
The second floor was completely reconfigured to accommodate a new master suite addition, enveloped by a rooftop garden. The A-frame master bedroom opens toward expansive views of the surrounding woods, reinforcing the home’s connection to nature.
Wide-plank pine flooring and a large Noguchi pendant light suspended from the wood ceiling establish a serene, contemplative tone. The adjoining bathing pavilion features a monolithic limestone vanity that introduces a sculptural presence, while carefully placed clear ribbed glass windows blur exterior views without sacrificing privacy. Soft plaster walls, checkerboard limestone tiles, and a freestanding tub are illuminated by warm natural light from a skylight above the shower, completing the spa-like experience.

A Living Master Plan
M Residence is conceived as an evolving project. Phase two of the master plan will introduce a new guest pavilion and carport, further expanding the residential compound while maintaining its architectural cohesion and deep connection to the Hudson Valley landscape.
