Nubé: A Morphological Exploration
"When we create opportunities for the public to temporarily assume agency in space- we create opportunities for stronger, more meaningful interactions.” -Down Below Competition Brief
Nubé emerges from the concept of morphological space, adapting into recognizable forms within an area that lacks context. Much like clouds that derive their identity from the empty sky (stratus, cumulus, cirrus, etc.), Nube operates independently of precedent.
Working within a site as contextually ambiguous as an alien world, we embrace the idea that the structure should function independently, free from preconceived notions. This leads to the creation of a modularized “everything space,” a fluid environment capable of constant evolution.

Nubé is activated by a hydraulic telescopic mast mechanism, which allows the structure’s soffit and ground to transform dynamically, creating an experiential space that responds to the community's immediate needs. The programmatic configurations are secondly activated through the state of vegetation present in the structure. If there are no external inputs, the structure will adapt to the changes in vegetation, modifying programs to fit each season.
We approach this project without imposing our own vision on the community, recognizing that we are not part of their lived experience. Instead, we empower the community to define the program as they see fit, allowing the space to evolve in real-time according to their preferences.

The idea of empowering the community to create their own space is doubled in the creation of the forecourt, preceding the main structure. This pristine oasis is left untouched, except for the implementation of local vegetation. This empty canvas allows for the community to use the court in a variety of potential ways.
