Quadrà
By a student, for students
WHY
I did this contest to challenge myself, I was bored and with nothing to do, stopped due to the pandemic at home. After taking part in several group works, I wanted to create something done entirely by myself, without the original idea being determined by a client or a final client.
I wanted to do a competition and I wanted to choose one with a close deadline, on purpose to test myself and not postpone the work. So I chose Green Retreat as a competition to participate in, I know it's not this one. The next night I couldn't sleep and kept thinking about which project would be a winner. I remembered another contest seen the same afternoon, Container City, I thought "wow that would be cool, but the other is more naturalistic and more experiential", a few hours later, without being able to sleep I thought "it would be really cool to recreate the tetris game with containers ". From that moment on I went under on that idea, and I wanted to recreate both the project with bright colors and simple shapes typical of tetris, and the experientiality of the previously chosen competition. And this is how the project was born.
TITLE INFO
What does Quadrà mean? is a word that means square in English. Yes, I know it is simple and obvious perhaps, but it is part of the local dialect, it belongs to a territory and here it is full of meaning that perhaps it does not have elsewhere. The intention in the title itself is to induce curiosity in the place and have a project with a title that is simple and easy to remember, which is more impactful than any other.
SITE
Stefano because you chose such a trivial place for the project, you could have placed it in a forest in a big city like New York, famous cities or spectacular landscapes.
I think that for someone who does not know the place it may seem like a place without identity, without value and maybe it is. As described in the tables, the residence is located near the new university campus of Grugliasco, where many students will spend a lot of time and carry out their studies. What better occasion to make my virtual contribution by imagining how to improve my hometown, maybe I will send the project to the mayor by writing "hey I designed this, look, it would be fantastic for our city". Finally, I think it makes no sense to design something in a random or distant place that is not known and appreciated as one's own city. To answer the question (which I asked myself), "yes, it could have been located in the Maldives, and perhaps it would have been spectacularly more beautiful, in the light of the sunset, with the drunken students on the beach, but architecturally it would not have made sense, I would have built something that is not needed in a place unrelated to my personal experience ".
I hope that the project will somehow please you, or at least that it will intrigue you.
If you have any criticisms, use the comments section to let me know, I'd love to hear and read some of them. But I also like the compliments if you have any!
Thank you for your time.
