Renovation of Foshan Guanyao Culture and Art Center by Greyspace Architects

The Foshan Guanyao Culture and Art Center, located in Guanyao Town, Nanhai District, Foshan, China, has been meticulously renovated by Greyspace Architects to revive its historical essence while introducing functional, contemporary spaces for artists, curators, and visitors. Covering 865 m², the project seamlessly integrates heritage preservation, ceramic art culture, and adaptive reuse to create a vibrant cultural hub.

Initiated in early 2023 by ceramic artist Li Jianshen, the site was once a quiet, overlooked cluster of buildings along Yiyuan West Road. The complex, comprising four distinct buildings constructed across different periods, features a long, narrow inner courtyard and rooftop terrace, forming a central public space that encourages interaction and creative engagement.

Historical Significance & Architectural Restoration

• Building 1, the former Pearl River Column Headquarters, reflects early 20th-century Republican-era architecture with a blend of Western and local features. Restoration focused on removing incongruous exterior paint, repairing railings, reinforcing timber floors, and preserving traces of historical markings.
• Building 2, a masonry-concrete structure built after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, underwent minor internal modifications to accommodate artist residencies while retaining its original stone finish.
• Building 3, a small concrete frame addition, was opened up to the courtyard, and its roof terrace reinforced to support public use and exhibitions.
• Building 4, a brick-and-timber residential structure, was transformed into a flexible ceramics studio. Steel-and-wood columns replaced interior brick walls to create an open, adaptable space while maintaining the original height differences as multifunctional zones.

Design Concept & Spatial Strategy

The architects preserved the authentic character of the century-old buildings, embracing the marks of time and use, while introducing a subtle ceramics-themed circulation system that guides visitors from the street into the courtyard. This system uses ceramic bricks, steel framing, and membrane installations to connect buildings, create seating areas, screens, and terraces, and organize movement with minimal intervention.

The renovation harmonizes historic architecture with modern functionality, revitalizing the Guanyao district through ceramic art, cultural engagement, and public accessibility. By emphasizing the site’s layered history and introducing flexible spaces for artistic creation, the project transforms the former cluster of neglected buildings into a thriving cultural landmark and community hub.
