Rural Bookstore Architecture: A New Chapter in Jiangmen, China

In the world of architectural design, blending tradition with modernity presents a unique challenge, especially in rural settings. The Grand Granary Bookstore of Librairie Avant-Garde, designed by SEU-ARCH Art+Zen Architects, is a prime example of innovative rural bookstore architecture. Situated in Tangkou Town, Kaiping City, Jiangmen, this project transforms abandoned granaries into a cultural haven, marking a significant achievement in rural revitalization and architectural creativity.

Historical Background and Architectural Concept

The Grand Granary Bookstore project is located in a region known for its World Cultural Heritage Diaolou Group, which significantly influences local architecture. The challenge was to repurpose seven historic granaries into a functional space without compromising their historical value. The architects' solution was to maintain the original structures while introducing modern elements, creating a unique rural bookstore that pays homage to its heritage.

The Renovation Process: Merging Old with New

The renovation process focused on preserving the granaries' original features while addressing structural issues. Five of the granaries were restored, focusing mainly on roof repairs using traditional techniques. This approach ensured the preservation of the buildings' historical essence while solving practical problems like leakage.

Two of the original buildings were demolished due to structural problems, making way for a new coffee shop and a literary bell tower. These additions complement the existing structures, enhancing the site's cultural value and visitor experience.

Interior Design: A Space for Literature and Community

The interior of the Grand Granary Bookstore is designed with accessibility and functionality in mind. The lower sections serve as bookshelves, while the upper areas feature unique spatial installations that enhance lighting and ambiance. This design principle supports the dual function of the space: a place for reading and a community hub.

Innovative Features and Environmental Considerations

One of the project's highlights is the café, constructed from a demolished dormitory site. Its glass structure and steel umbrella columns create an open, inviting space, continuing the theme of blending the old with the new.

The long gallery connecting the granaries acts as both a cultural sales area and a gallery, showcasing the versatility of rural bookstore architecture. Skylights and careful placement of structural elements ensure that the original granary walls remain undamaged and integral to the overall aesthetic.

The literary bell tower, standing at 17 meters, is a nod to the region's Diaolou heritage. Its design, featuring irregular black steel stairs, provides varying perspectives of the surrounding countryside, linking history with the present day.
