A Modern Seaside Home Rooted in Traditional Korean Architecture

Located in Jung-gu, South Korea, Sailing House by IROJE KHM Architects is more than just a residential structure—it is a poetic response to a family's desire for a peaceful, seaside lifestyle after years of urban living. Perched near the iconic Incheon Bridge, this 376-square-meter home offers panoramic ocean views and harmonizes deeply with both nature and Korean architectural heritage.

Embracing the Horizon: A Vision Beyond the Sea

Designed as a final “nest” for a family transitioning from a nomadic urban life, the Sailing House gazes endlessly toward the horizon. The site was selected not only for its proximity to the sea but also for the emotional and visual symbolism it offers—a metaphorical gateway to the family's future.

To fully capture the sea’s serenity, the architects twisted the axis of the home. Each room faces the nearby ocean, allowing the sea to visually and emotionally penetrate the home from all angles. This orientation not only ensures privacy from neighboring structures but also creates a dynamic and sculptural building form.

Architecture in Motion: Dynamic Forms and Angled Spaces

By rotating each section of the house toward the seascape, the architects achieved a structure that feels in motion—like a ship catching the wind. This design strategy transforms the home into an abstract sailboat, constantly navigating the horizon. The angular geometry also produces unique interior experiences and fluid circulation throughout the residence.

Panoramic Living: Terraces and Flying Promenades

Outdoor terraces extend from each room, serving as personal observatories to the Incheon Sea. These terraces are connected by floating promenades—lightweight architectural bridges that not only offer elevated views but also help define the home's interior courtyard. This introverted courtyard anchors the home, providing a quiet oasis sheltered from the surrounding environment.

Seamless Connection Between Land and Sea

Water plays a crucial role in the spatial composition. Integrated elements such as ponds, streams, and waterfalls visually connect the home to the nearby ocean. This curated water landscape blurs the line between natural and built environments, reinforcing the home's relationship with its coastal context.

A Home That Brings Families Together

Modern Korean families often lead compartmentalized lives, with little shared time. Sailing House addresses this social pattern by introducing a theatrical living space—a central communal area that visually ties together the private rooms. With floor-to-ceiling windows framing the sea and an open vertical flow between levels, the space encourages spontaneous encounters and nurtures familial bonds.

The Spirit of Koreanness in a Contemporary Form

The home’s sinuous form recalls the gentle curves of traditional Korean hanok architecture. The concave rooflines and flowing spatial sequences echo cultural typologies while embodying the kinetic energy of a ship’s sail. In doing so, IROJE KHM Architects have created a residence that is at once deeply Korean and boldly modern.

Sailing Toward a Hopeful Future

Sailing House is a metaphorical vessel, carrying its inhabitants toward a new chapter in life—one filled with reflection, serenity, and endless possibility. As each day begins with the sun rising over the sea and ends with it setting into the horizon, the architecture becomes a living companion in the family’s journey.
