Ideology
The words ‘Home Futura’ bring to the mind an image of the future, every human being has an ideal future and an essential part of this futuristic visual is a home. Idioms like ‘Home is where the heart is’ come to mind. As architects, for many of us the building itself is the heart to our home.
We run an architectural firm together in the city. The city life being hectic and more congested, the quality of life is not up to mark, not to mention that living in the city, amidst the pollution and rush became too dull. So, we decided to move to a serene setting on a cliff, by the ocean where they can work and still have a sense of vacation.
In this project, each of the three users has a pre-existing manner of thinking about their ideal aesthetics and how they approach concepts. Therefore, a major challenge faced by us while designing was how we could blend all our aesthetics together and create a homely harmonious space while only having a few things in common, like, animé, taste in music, the need for a serene and peaceful space. This design embraces their individuality and still lets them share the same space despite having different taste in architectural spaces.
To us architects, we know that the colours, materials, arches, curves, form and many more things really define the vibe of that space and hence are features we place a lot of importance in.
One thing that united our working style was our preference in architectural styles. The requirements of every person were same yet the vibe of the spaces completely different.
Though all three users were united in profession, their hobbies were very different. One is a gamer and an artist who spends 90% of his time on his computer and absolutely loves it, so a gaming room was attached to the bedroom. The one who likes cosy and comfy spaces and loves to read books has her small bedroom with just the right portion of furniture. The last one loves her pets, binge watching shows and just chilling. So, a very spacious bedroom with great sense of openness was designed for her.
The first user wants more of a gaming room with engaging and outgoing atmosphere, the second one prefers cosy and tight spaces and the third one wants a luxurious yet minimal and peaceful space. Considering these three users, three very different architectural spaces were united with one architectural style, i.e. surrealism.
In order to attain the same, huge arches, circles and curves have been used throughout the houses' interior and exterior. These combined with pastel colours give just the right sense of dreaminess. The arches also helped segregate spaces without having to block the visual connection altogether. So, the surrealism united these three people's spaces into one, making the dwelling a perfect "HOME" for them.
To conclude, the meaning of home changes with every individual. The factors defining this are their lifestyle, personality, preferences and even their approach towards life. This particular home has been designed for a trio of designers. In this house we successfully blended all the different requirements of three very different users by finding a common point i.e. Surrealism.
We created a space that the trio could call a ‘HOME’.
