The Sector 02 Irrigation Module Offices, designed by 3ME Arquitectura, stand as a testament to the fusion of history, architecture, and agriculture in the Salvatierra region of Guanajuato, Mexico. The project takes root in the cultural legacy of the Lerma River basin, a region rich in agricultural history and water management conflicts dating back to pre-Hispanic times. The design focuses on honoring the region’s agricultural roots while integrating contemporary architectural principles.

A Historical Context Shaped by Water

Historically, Salvatierra has been a focal point for agricultural activity, particularly concerning the control and distribution of water. The irrigation system, which can be traced back to pre-Columbian civilizations, has undergone significant transformations over time. By the time the National Water Commission (CNA) took charge, the irrigation systems were decentralized and managed by peasant organizations, with the Association of Agricultural Producers of the Irrigation Module in Salvatierra at the forefront.

This association serves over 6,100 members, spread across 16,000 hectares and 70 communities, cultivating more than 32 agricultural products, including grains, vegetables, fruits, and tubers. The design of the Irrigation Module Offices draws inspiration from this agricultural heritage and is a direct reflection of the cultural and ecological significance of the region.

Architectural Design Inspired by Agricultural Tradition

Understanding the cultural context and historical importance of agriculture in the region was crucial to the project. The architectural concept of the Sector 02 Irrigation Module Offices incorporates the idea that the building should reflect the agricultural scale and significance of the area. By blending contemporary design elements with traditional agricultural forms, the building embodies a unique architectural identity that respects both past and present.

Drawing from regional agricultural architecture, the design references the scale and typology of haciendas, convents, and grain storage silos. These elements provide a visual connection to the historical agricultural landscape while grounding the building within its cultural context. The design highlights the importance of "type" in architecture, where the true nature of the building emerges through its cultural, economic, organizational, ecological, and tectonic relationships.

Architectural Features and Layout

The building’s design focuses on creating a sense of place and historical resonance. The structure features a grand entrance flanked by two pyramid-shaped bodies, inspired by traditional grain storage silos. These large, rotated pyramidal forms create an agricultural scale, symbolizing the historical role of agriculture in the region. A central plaza and patio layout organize the space, leading to various volumes positioned on a stone platform. This arrangement facilitates different programmatic activities, with spaces of varying heights surrounding the courtyard. The entire composition culminates in a body of water, emphasizing the significance of water management in the region's agricultural practices.

Sustainable and Contextual Construction Materials

In keeping with the local context, the construction of the Sector 02 Irrigation Module Offices utilizes materials that are both sustainable and reflective of the region’s architectural traditions. Local labor was employed to source stones from the surrounding fields, while traditional red terracotta bricks were used to clad the building. Raw exposed concrete serves as a structural element, adding modernity to the design while maintaining a connection to the region’s industrial past. The interior walls are finished with plastered bricks, and the floors are tiled with locally sourced ceramic materials.

By promoting sustainable agricultural practices, driving economic growth, and offering job opportunities, the project contributes to strengthening local ties to the land. The success of the irrigation module further strengthens interest in the region’s agricultural output, encouraging the preservation of local traditions while supporting future generations.
