By planting "cities" underground, the Seed City: Wadi Al-Hitan project reimagines the way we approach resource regeneration and environmental sustainability. This visionary concept, conceived by Randy Luo and recognized as a shortlisted entry in the EHC - Sahara competition, explores how underground urban development can balance the overuse of resources and provide a sustainable habitat for humans in one of Earth's most extreme environments.

The Challenge of Sahara's Harsh Climate

The Sahara Desert, the largest desert on Earth, presents a unique set of challenges, including severe water scarcity, high evaporation rates, and extreme temperature fluctuations. With annual rainfall as low as 5 mm in certain areas and daytime temperatures soaring to 58°C, creating a sustainable human habitat in this environment requires innovative solutions.

Seed City's Revolutionary Concept

The Seed City project aims to:

  1. Underground Insulation: By embedding cities below the surface, Seed City leverages the sand's natural insulation properties to regulate temperatures and reduce exposure to harsh environmental conditions.
  2. Resource Conservation: The underground design minimizes evaporation and maximizes the use of groundwater resources stored in the Nubian sandstone aquifer.
  3. Philosophical Inspiration: The seed represents hope and regeneration, symbolizing the potential for humanity to adapt and thrive even in the most challenging conditions.

A Glimpse into the Future

Seed City envisions a future where human activity harmonizes with nature. The project highlights the need to rethink traditional architectural norms and embrace sustainable urban development to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

By redefining architecture's role in sustainability, Seed City: Wadi Al-Hitan offers a blueprint for how humanity can coexist with and thrive in extreme environments, setting a precedent for future innovations in urban design.
