Reimagining Detroit's Urban Fabric

The Six55 Detroit Mixed-Use Residential Building, designed by ISA - Interface Studio Architects, is a striking addition to Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood. Completed in 2023, this project integrates contemporary architecture with historic design references, creating a harmonious balance between modernity and tradition.

Inspired by the Willis-Selden Local Historic District, where mid-rise apartment buildings with large front yards and recessed porches define the urban landscape, Six55 Detroit embraces these elements while introducing a bold and dynamic design approach.

A Super Porch for Social Interaction

One of the standout features of Six55 Detroit is the reinvention of the historic super porch, transforming it into an activated public streetscape. The required front yard setback became an opportunity to design a welcoming social space, featuring:

  • A small café at street level, inviting pedestrians into the communal environment.
  • Landscaped green spaces, enhancing the connection between residents and the surrounding streetscape.
  • Folded façade elements, providing depth, maximizing views, and offering unique private balconies for west-facing units.

The inclusion of a common rooftop deck further enriches this socially connected living experience, offering residents a dynamic perspective of Midtown Detroit.

Adaptive Design: Cut, Fold, and Blend

ISA’s design concept skillfully adapts to its diverse urban surroundings. The folded front façade creates a dynamic architectural language that:

  • Acknowledges its neighbors by gradually transitioning between a larger contemporary structure and a historic Victorian house on the adjacent lot.
  • Frames the building’s entry lobby, offering a welcoming approach while maintaining a strong visual identity.
  • Activates the front yard setback, encouraging pedestrian engagement and enhancing the livability of the street.

This carefully considered design allows Six55 Detroit to blend into its surroundings while establishing a unique presence within the neighborhood.

Diverse Housing for a Growing Community

As Detroit continues to evolve, there is an increasing demand for diverse housing options that cater to different lifestyles and budgets. Six55 Detroit answers this need with a mix of residential unit typologies, including:

  • 9 studio apartments, ideal for young professionals and minimalists.
  • 18 one-bedroom units, offering a balance of space and affordability.
  • 9 two-bedroom apartments, suited for families, roommates, or those in need of extra workspace.

The building’s C-shaped layout accommodates 36 residential units above a thoughtfully designed ground-floor commercial space and a 25-space parking lot, providing convenience without overwhelming the streetscape.

Materiality: Honoring Detroit’s Industrial Legacy

Reflecting Detroit’s rich industrial history, Six55 Detroit utilizes textured metal cladding in a mix of:

  • Standing seam and corrugated metal panels, evoking the city's heritage of metal fabrication.
  • Varying panel widths, creating a dynamic façade that shifts with light and shadow.
  • Bright orange accents, drawing attention to the inset super porch and adding a playful yet refined contrast to the overall design.

This material palette not only pays tribute to Detroit’s past but also positions the building as a bold, contemporary landmark within Midtown.

A Vision for Future Urban Living

The Six55 Detroit Mixed-Use Residential Building by ISA - Interface Studio Architects is more than just a new addition to the city’s skyline. It represents a forward-thinking approach to urban living, where historic influences, social connectivity, and innovative design come together.
