Taloel House by Zozaya Arquitectos: A Tropical Retreat Designed for Efficiency and Comfort
Taloel House blends sustainable design with tropical comfort, using local materials, passive cooling, and efficient spatial planning in Mexico.
Nestled in the lush coastal town of Troncones along Mexico’s Pacific coast, Taloel House by Zozaya Arquitectos masterfully fuses sustainable tropical living with spatial efficiency and architectural elegance. This contemporary residence balances a demanding program—including four bedrooms and multiple social areas—within a highly compact, energy-efficient two-story volume.

Compact Form, Expansive Living
From the outset, the central design challenge was to optimize land use without compromising on comfort or spatial richness. Zozaya Arquitectos responded with a compact and efficient architectural layout, creating a home that offers both privacy and openness. The result is a thoughtful configuration that maximizes usability while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

Climate-Responsive Architecture
Designed specifically for the warm, humid climate of the Pacific region, Taloel House features a large floating roof canopy that extends generously over all facades. This roof provides essential shade and thermal protection, reducing solar gain and supporting the home’s bioclimatic performance.
Natural ventilation is a key feature, with strategically placed openings and cross-ventilation strategies that minimize the need for mechanical cooling. These design moves contribute to a low-energy, climate-responsive home that is perfectly attuned to its tropical environment.

Materials Rooted in Local Traditions
Taloel House showcases a harmonious blend of contemporary design and traditional materials. The architectural palette emphasizes light tones, with ivory-colored plaster walls that reflect natural light and contribute to a sense of calm and spaciousness. These are beautifully contrasted by warm wooden accents that bring depth and texture to the interiors.
The construction utilizes masonry and brick walls, along with a steel structure supporting wooden beams. One of the most distinctive elements is the use of huesito de coco—a traditional roofing material made from dried palm leaves—integrated into the slab. This feature not only grounds the home in local building traditions but also enhances its environmental sensitivity.

A Dialogue Between Architecture and Nature
Throughout the residence, indoor and outdoor spaces are seamlessly interconnected, allowing the lush garden and courtyard areas to extend the living experience beyond the built envelope. Expansive windows frame views of the natural surroundings, reinforcing the architectural dialogue between shelter and landscape.
Taloel House by Zozaya Arquitectos is a sustainable tropical home that prioritizes thermal comfort, material honesty, and architectural efficiency. It is a compelling example of how traditional building methods can be reimagined through a contemporary lens, offering a model for contextual and climate-sensitive design in the modern tropics.
