Bandırma, a mid-sized industrial port city on the Sea of Marmara in Turkiye, embodies the compounding pressures that industrial infrastructure places on coastal ecologies. The port hinterland have progressively enclosed upon wetlands, agricultural lands, and aquatic ecosystems, producing fragmented shorelines that are simultaneously ecologically degraded and publicly inaccessible. Water contamination from industrial runoff, the suppression of natural hydrological cycles beneath hardened surfaces, and the severance of the coastline from urban life define site's critical condition.

terra // critica identifies this zone as a site of urgent ecological and social repair while responding to contemporary water related challenges. The project interrogates whether human oriented productive spaces “anthropocentric” and nature based spaces “ecocentric” can coexist symbiotically, through the construction of shared critical thresholds. These thresholds spatialize an environmental ethics tension: the ecocentric position that nature holds intrinsic value, against the anthropocentric reality that human agency continues to mediate and shape ecological recovery.

Thus at the larger scale, this search for shared spaces conceptually transforms into “critical thresholds”, collective spaces where nature, individuals, the city, and maritime activities can operate together in a symbiotic way. These become sustainable spaces where people can both contribute to the healing of nature and continue their everyday activities. Beyond these overlapping zones, some areas are dedicated solely to ecocentric practices, while others allow more flexible anthropocentric activities that soften the thresholds. Spaces through this scale are based on connectivity and a holistic approach to the entire concept, where naturalized spaces are protected and strengthened, and urban pressures are reduced by allowing permeability and accessibility in Bandırma through more micro scale strategy decisions. In the same way , decisions made at all scales aim to define axes and programs within these critical thresholds where humans can coexist with nature. At the same time, the project seeks to address ongoing issues such as environmental pollution, water contamination, and air pollution, linking these interventions to individual participation and observation.

At the 1:1000 scale, the design decisions emerge as the branching and refinement of the generalized typological thresholds inherited from the 1:5000 scale. The thresholds based previously as human based production spaces and nature based spaces manifest as hydrological resurfacing thresholds, ecocentric network consolidation thresholds, anthropocentric softening thresholds, temporal thresholds, co-existive communal thresholds, and unprivatized thresholds. Stemming from both ecocentric and anthropocentric spatial logics // and from the pursuit of a deeper ecological understanding // these thresholds are positioned across the harbor and within the urban fabric in differentiated yet interrelated ways.

Anthropocentric thresholds predominantly aim to strengthen human+human relations and interior urban voids by grounding them in ecological and nature-based spaces, whereas ecocentric thresholds seek to establish dialogues with existing and under-activated green systems, ensuring preservation and enhancement of natural ecological continuities. The harbor to which these thresholds converge is approached as an ecological spine, functioning simultaneously as a softening interface and as a medium through which humans may enter into a democratized, symbiotic relationship with the port. The convergence and layering of these critical threshold typologies articulate the port area as the “terracritical” zone. Activities within this terracritical region are structured with the intention of re-establishing shoreline continuity and reconnecting the coast with the inner urban life, thereby reclaiming the right of humans to inhabit and experience these spaces.

At the 1:500 scale, the established ecological relationships reveal a more stabilized and linear organization particularly along the sea // port thresholds. Within this zone, spatial production follows a relatively fixed programmatic spine, where most interventions are oriented toward water remediation and ecological regeneration. This stabilization operates as a deliberate counter // condition to the inherent dynamism and fluctuation of the sea, aiming to construct a more legible and resilient interface between land and water.

Spaces aligned along this programmatic spine function at or near sea level, enabling direct human–nature interaction and allowing users to physically and perceptually approach the water. These areas are conceived not only as experiential zones but also as pedagogical environments, where ecological processes become observable and learnable. As the spatial sequence descends into lower courtyards, the formal logic begins to dissolve from linearity into a more open and field-like condition. Here, space is no longer defined by fixed edges but is articulated through variations in paving density, scale, and texture. In contrast to the macro-scale ecological strategies at the waterfront, these inner thresholds operate through micro-scale ecological acupuncture. Gabion walls anchored to fractured ground planes, soil-connected substructures, and modular vertical micro-gardens introduce adaptable ecological elements that can shift in form and position.

Through this layered approach, the project constructs a sequence of plazas that remain fundamentally human-oriented while simultaneously embedding ecocentric processes at a micro scale, producing a coexistive spatial system where ecological repair and everyday use are continuously intertwined. As the sequence moves further south, access begins to operate through temporal synchronizations, revealing a more ecologically naturalized span.

Taken as a whole, the gradient from upper to lower levels reveals a gradual reduction in human agency. While the northern waterfront allows for intense human–nature interaction, the southern zones progressively transition into landscapes of observation rather than occupation. This descending sequence articulates a deliberate shift from anthropocentric engagement toward ecocentric dominance, where human presence becomes increasingly distant, mediated, and ultimately withdrawn in favor of ecological continuity.

Within the 200 construction framework, the planting logic ecologically negotiates anthropocentric and ecocentric relations by introducing carbon-sequestering buffer thresholds, naturalized ecological spines, and water-collecting zones that simultaneously support human well-being and ecological restoration. These vegetative systems do not function merely as landscape elements, but as performative infrastructures embedded within the spatial logic of the site. in the sense, Planting is conceived as an ecocentric yet negotiable layer, composed of species selected for air filtration, water purification, and soil regeneration, while remaining compatible with human circulation and use.

Importantly, not all ecological thresholds are equally accessible. While certain zones are designed as accessible ecological thresholds, allowing human presence and interaction, others remain non accessible, operating autonomously to prioritize habitat continuity and ecological processes. This calibrated distribution of access reinforces an ethical hierarchy between use and protection.

Spatially, the system is structured around two primary linear logics located along the harbor and port edge. The first is the programmatic “spine”, which concentrates multifunctional spaces where ecological processes and human activities intersect. The second is the “circulation trace”, a thinner and more subtle axis expressed primarily through paving differentiation. This trace operates as a connective device, translating upper scale decisions into spatial continuity across the site and re-linking dispersed programmatic elements back to building-scale interventions.

Moreover, The structural plan articulates a material strategy based on selective intervention rather than total replacement, treating the existing concrete surface as a substrate to be carefully perforated, reworked, and reprogrammed. Instead of fully removing hard ground, which would demand high biomass production and intensive remediation / the design operates through micro acupuncture cuts, cracks, and seams that allow water, soil, and vegetation to infiltrate the surface incrementally. These interventions generate differentiated traces, paths, and ground textures that define movement, pause, and interaction without erasing the site’s anthropocentric memory.

Materialization forms the groundwork through which critical spaces can operate; without spatial and constructive articulation, these systems cannot sustain themselves. Within the port hinterland, both large-scale and micro-scale interventions are inevitably initiated through anthropocentric agency. From a philosophical standpoint, this reveals a paradox: contemporary natural systems rarely exist without human mediation, and even when restored, they cannot return to an untouched or original state. This condition is the result of prolonged human extraction and transformation of ecological systems, positioning humans simultaneously as the source of degradation and as the agents of repair. While this reflects the present reality, it does not negate the long-term autonomy and resilience of nature. Ecocentric systems, though intrinsically holistic and ultimately dominant over time, remain highly vulnerable under anthropocentric control. For this reason, balance cannot be re-established through singular or monumental gestures, but through precise, micro-scale, construction-based interventions—operating as spatial acupuncture—embedded within larger systems. These critical interventions allow ecocentric processes to regain agency while acknowledging that anthropocentric frameworks will continue to prioritize human needs, making calibration rather than opposition the essential spatial strategy.
