Tetherow Overlook House by Hacker Architects: A Harmonious Blend of Modernism and Nature
Tetherow Overlook House blends modern architecture with nature, featuring sculptural forms, sustainable design, and seamless indoor-outdoor integration in Oregon’s high desert.
Located in the rugged yet picturesque landscape of Central Oregon’s high desert, the Tetherow Overlook House by Hacker Architects exemplifies a seamless fusion of contemporary architecture and natural surroundings. Designed as a sculptural abstraction that harmonizes with its environment, this stunning residence prioritizes spatial sophistication, material minimalism, and an immersive indoor-outdoor experience.

Architectural Vision: A Contemporary Desert Sanctuary
Nestled atop a scenic bluff, the 7,600-square-foot home unfolds through a series of cascading platforms that descend along a gentle, pumice-covered hillside. Inspired by the region’s volcanic rock formations, faceted mass walls anchor key spaces, directing movement while framing breathtaking views of the expansive desert landscape. The architectural composition integrates three distinct wooden volumes, each serving a specific function: garage and studio, private bedroom suites, and the dining pavilion.

A Home Designed for Art, Family, and Entertaining
Reflecting the homeowners’ passion for conceptual modern art, the Tetherow Overlook House is designed to accommodate an art-forward lifestyle while supporting family life and social gatherings. The interiors balance rich, organic textures with a restrained material palette, creating an atmosphere of understated luxury. The interplay between enclosed and open spaces enhances the dynamic flow of movement, offering areas for relaxation, creativity, and entertainment.

Entrance and Circulation: A Journey Through Light and Space
The residence’s entrance is located at the highest point of the site, forming a semi-enclosed auto and entry court that integrates the garage, parking platform, and a perched bedroom volume. Visitors are greeted by a dramatic patinated steel pivot door, which leads into an intermediate level positioned between the main living areas. As one moves through the home, carefully framed views reveal different perspectives of the desert, sky, and distant terrain.
The spatial arrangement transitions between open-air terraces and protected interiors, with natural light and shadow playing a key role in shaping the atmosphere. Floors, ceilings, and walls extend fluidly from inside to outside, reinforcing the home’s deep connection with nature.

Interior Layout: Multi-Level Living with a View
The main living spaces unfold across multiple levels, each distinct yet interconnected:
- Media lounge, living room, and kitchen occupy separate but connected platforms.
- The dining area, located a few steps above the kitchen, enjoys a more elevated, intimate setting.
- The upper floor houses a primary bedroom suite, open workspace, gallery, and two guest rooms, offering privacy and breathtaking views.
- A finely crafted wood screen staircase creates a dynamic layering of interior spaces, allowing light to filter through while maintaining a sense of separation.
- The lower level, partially embedded into the hillside, contains an entertainment space and spa, providing a tranquil retreat shielded from the elements.

Materiality: A Dialogue Between Architecture and Nature
The material palette of Tetherow Overlook House echoes the surrounding high desert environment. Inspired by the weathered texture of tree snags, the rectangular wooden volumes are clad in coarse wood slats, maintaining a continuous surface across both windows and walls. The monolithic faceted masses, reminiscent of basalt and obsidian formations, further reinforce the home’s sculptural presence. These design choices not only enhance the residence’s timeless aesthetic but also contribute to its resilience against the harsh desert climate.

Sustainability and Climate Responsiveness
Given its setting in the high desert region, the home is designed to offer varying degrees of shelter from the intense sun and seasonal winds. By integrating strategic overhangs, passive cooling techniques, and microclimate-responsive spaces, the architecture ensures year-round comfort while minimizing environmental impact.

A Modern Architectural Masterpiece in Oregon’s High Desert
The Tetherow Overlook House is a testament to Hacker Architects’ ability to create designs that are both sculptural and deeply rooted in their context. By embracing minimalist materiality, spatial richness, and a fluid connection to nature, this residence stands as an architectural landmark that redefines modern desert living.
