Institutional Excellence Award entry of Hybrid Futures '19 - Work x Fly

By Rabah Saoud, Aseel Mohammad Mansour, and Nasma Yasir Abdulhaleem

In an era where cities are reaching their horizontal limits, "The Unplugged City" explores the transformative potential of vertical urbanism. This visionary project imagines a pair of floating hybrid towers—two distinct yet interconnected structures—rising above the urban plane to form a cohesive architectural ecosystem. Together, they embody a radical departure from conventional development patterns by embracing a philosophy grounded in collaboration, sustainability, and experiential integration.

Rather than isolating functions within rigid, single-use structures, the towers promote a seamless blend of activities and interactions. They are unified by shared communal experiences, multi-layered infrastructure, and renewable energy systems, merging to generate an active, self-sufficient vertical city that floats above the ground. The design transcends traditional zoning principles, weaving residential, commercial, and public functions into a continuously evolving spatial matrix.

"The Unplugged City" tackles the growing need for compact, high-density urban solutions by proposing a bold alternative to land-based development. It leverages cutting-edge technologies and environmentally responsive strategies to shape a new kind of built environment—one that hovers above the constraints of today’s cities. Its floating configuration offers a symbolic and functional liberation from existing urban limits, urging us to reconsider how we define and occupy space in the sky.

As a standout entry in the Hybrid Futures '19 - Work x Fly competition, the project delivers a compelling vision for future urban living. It responds innovatively to the challenges of mobility, climate adaptation, spatial equity, and architectural identity—laying the groundwork for how vertical cities might thrive in an era defined by transformation.
