TLAPALTEOTL : The Lake That Refused to Die
The water Mexico City drained. The lake that refused to die.
Five centuries of colonial drainage, infrastructural overwriting, and epistemic suppression have rendered Lake Texcoco not merely a lost landscape, but a forgotten technology. From a young age, I have been captivated by how ancient civilisations flourished by drawing intelligently on what their land and waterways offered, developing systems of extraordinary sophistication without industrial machinery. Mesoamerica thrived on this precise ecological literacy. Yet, the modern iteration of Mexico City stands as a testament to a dialectical war against its own geography—a city built on an engineered vacuum, continuously battling flooding, catastrophic water scarcity, and severe land subsidence.

A drained civilisation
Before 1521, the valley was not a city but a system of five interconnected lakes. The Mexica capital, Tenochtitlan, fed a population of roughly 300,000 through chinampas, a closed-loop agricultural system so productive that a single hectare could yield four to five harvests a year.
The conquest did not simply replace one ruler with another.
It actively erased the knowledge that kept the lake alive: the dikes and sluice gates were breached, the codices were burned, and within a generation the people who knew how to manage the water were largely gone. What followed was five centuries of drainage that turned a generative lake into the ghost beneath a sinking megacity.
Today parts of Mexico City drop by as much as 50 cm a year, and the saturated lakebed amplifies earthquakes, as it did in 1985 when ground built on the old lake shook up to five times harder than solid rock only kilometres away. I came to see Lake Texcoco not as a lost landscape but as a forgotten technology.
This thesis project asks a critical question:

Infrastructure as the argument
TLAPALTEOTL occupies a neglected strip of land on the southern edge of Lago Nabor Carrillo, pinched between Canales Chimalhuacán I and II and currently used as a construction-waste dumping ground. The site sits exactly where a flood-prone, water-scarce municipality meets one of the largest ecological reserves in the valley, separated only by two canals.
Rather than treat that contradiction as background, I made it the argument. The building is a water purification and salt extraction facility that operates as working infrastructure rather than a museum about one. Saline water is drawn in, moved through a filtration sequence informed by Mexica hydraulic logic, and released as two outputs: tequesquite salt for community use and trade, and clean water feeding chinampa prototype beds at lake level.

Around that productive core sit a tequesquite workshop and salt trading post, spirulina and ahuautle cultivation tanks, and a youth education centre where residents of Chimalhuacán aged fourteen to twenty-four learn by running the infrastructure itself. Knowledge is transmitted through operation, not curriculum.

A sequence felt in the body
I wanted the architecture to be felt in the body before it is understood in the mind. Drawing on Foucault's heterotopia and its ritual of entry, the sequence descends before it rises. Visitors cross a pedestrian overbridge beside the highway, drop underground into a salt-crust chamber that references the tequesquite encrustation of the real lakebed, pass through a space that confronts the aquifer crisis, reach a boat dock at water level, then ascend the tower. The geometry is anchored to the place rather than invented: it follows the 7°36' skew of the Templo Mayor grid and is measured in the Mexica matl unit of 1.67m, with proportions drawn from the Nezahualcóyotl dike.





What the critique changed
The project did not resolve cleanly, and I think that is worth recording honestly. An early massing forced people underground but failed to narrate the real story of the canals, the saline water and the sinking ground. A mid-stage critique pushed harder still: the steel I had chosen sat uneasily against the cultural and ecological claims of the project, the narrative followed only a single path toward the tower, and the voids between spaces were doing no work. Reworking those points became the most valuable stretch of the thesis. I moved toward a lighter timber logic suited to a water condition, opened the circulation so the building could be approached and read from several directions, and gave the empty volumes intent.

Designed to disappear
The largest shift was accepting that the building should not last forever. Conventional architecture chases longevity, but permanence is dishonest to a lake that has been vanishing for 500 years. So I designed for breakdown. Over the coming century the salt-exposed walls corrode and settle back into the ground, while the capillary network of canals and chinampa beds keeps spreading outward toward the urban edge. The architecture is intentionally temporary; the reactivated landscape is what is meant to endure, and with it a measure of the lake's identity is returned to the people who inherit this ground.

This is what the idea of rememory came to mean for me. Not nostalgia for a drowned kingdom, but the recovery of working knowledge and its return to a community that was cut off from it. Coming from a region where timber vernacular houses are being quietly replaced by concrete, I recognise the same slow loss of inherited knowledge. TLAPALTEOTL is my argument that architecture can do the opposite: it can carry that knowledge forward, and then get out of the way.
