The project originates from the observation of rural schools in India, where school furniture is often difficult to transport, expensive to replace, and poorly adaptable to the diverse needs of students.
The project originates from observations of rural schools in India, where furniture is often difficult to transport, expensive to replace, and poorly suited to students’ evolving needs.
In response, the project proposes a lightweight, accessible, and resource-efficient furniture system that improves the learning environment while minimizing material use.
The system uses locally available materials: bamboo for the structure and eucalyptus for the surfaces. Both are affordable, widely available in India, and often sourced from production offcuts, giving value to materials that would otherwise be discarded.
Lightweight forms and simple construction facilitate transport, assembly, maintenance, and repair, making the system suitable even for remote communities.
The trapezoidal desk is designed to support both individual learning and group activities. Its shape allows desks to be combined or separated easily, creating a more flexible and collaborative classroom environment.
To extend its lifespan, the desk is available in three heights, adapting to students’ growth while reducing the need for multiple furniture systems:
60 cm — 8–9 years
65 cm — 11–12 years
72 cm — 15–16 years
A single adaptable system optimizes materials, production, and transportation while meeting different ergonomic requirements.
The seating collection follows the same sustainable approach, using bamboo offcuts for the structure and eucalyptus offcuts for the seating surfaces.
The system includes three chair heights designed to accompany different stages of student growth and ensure long-term ergonomic comfort.
Two backless stool versions further increase classroom flexibility, allowing a variety of learning and social configurations.
To improve comfort, the bamboo structure incorporates rubber elements beneath the seat, providing impact absorption and a gentle rocking motion that helps reduce stress during prolonged use.
Additional stackable seating options are designed to minimize storage space while maintaining strength and stability. Their curved forms create a visual language that is both functional and expressive.
The 3-meter communal table is designed to encourage shared meals and social interaction.
Its generous dimensions and open form create opportunities for dialogue and connection, fostering a stronger sense of community among students, families, and educators.
More than a functional object, it transforms the school environment into a place of gathering, sharing, and relationships.
