VORTEX: Sustainable Architecture Reimagining Co-Living in Singapore
VORTEX reimagines sustainable co-living in Singapore, blending water, greenery, workspaces and community into one fluid urban habitat today.
In a city internationally recognized for its relationship between dense urban development and landscape, VORTEX proposes a new model of sustainable architecture centered on living, working, community, water, and nature. Conceived in response to Singapore’s Greater Southern Waterfront masterplan, the project explores how the emerging lifestyle of digital nomads can become part of a larger urban ecosystem rather than existing as an isolated residential typology.
Designed by Nicholas Lim, Megan Riri, and Siao Si Looi, VORTEX was a Shortlisted entry of NomadHouse 2020.
The proposal goes beyond creating apartments with shared workspaces. Instead, it establishes an interconnected environment in which residential units, co-working facilities, gardens, recreational areas, water channels, communal programs, and circulation systems operate as parts of a single spatial experience.
The result is an ambitious vision of sustainable architecture where the traditional boundaries between home, workplace, landscape, and public space begin to dissolve.


Connecting VORTEX to Singapore’s Greater Southern Waterfront
The starting point of the design is its proximity to Singapore’s southern shoreline.
Rather than considering the site as an independent development, VORTEX responds to the larger transformation proposed for the Greater Southern Waterfront. The project imagines itself as a central node within this evolving urban landscape, creating a stronger relationship between the downtown core, waterfront, greenery, and future modes of transportation.
Two natural systems become particularly important to the proposal: the green and the blue.
Green represents landscape, planted terraces, gardens, and outdoor environments. Blue represents water, waterways, recreation, and mobility. Their integration becomes one of the project’s primary architectural strategies.
Instead of treating nature as decoration around a building, VORTEX brings landscape and water directly into the spatial organization of the development.
This approach allows sustainable architecture to operate at the scale of the entire urban experience.
The Vortex as an Architectural Generator
The project takes its name from its most recognizable formal idea.
The massing develops around the geometry and movement of a vortex, creating a composition of curved towers, terraces, bridges, voids, and circulation paths that draw movement toward the center.
The concept is not purely sculptural. The diagrams reveal several interconnected principles behind the architectural form: circulation, water, airflow, extrusion, and terracing.
Circulation follows the rotational movement of the vortex, encouraging inhabitants to move through and around the development rather than simply traveling vertically between isolated floors.
Water penetrates the site and reinforces connections with Singapore’s waterfront.
Airflow influences the orientation and separation of building volumes, while terraces gradually transform large vertical masses into a sequence of accessible outdoor environments.
Together, these strategies create an architecture defined by movement.
A Central Core for Community Life
At the heart of VORTEX is its communal core.
The project deliberately concentrates shared activities toward the center, while residential accommodation occupies more peripheral areas. This establishes a gradient between private retreat and collective activity.
Instead of separating inhabitants into individual towers, circulation repeatedly brings them toward shared spaces.
The central zone accommodates a wide variety of programs, including an auditorium, café, lounge, library, open-air kitchen, indoor and outdoor activity spaces, co-working environments, and recreational facilities.
This concentration of functions is fundamental to the project’s approach to communal living.
A person may leave a residential unit, cross a landscaped bridge, work from a collaborative studio, meet another resident in a café, move toward the library, relax beside the water, and eventually return home without leaving the larger architectural ecosystem.
Such sequences create opportunities for unplanned interaction.
VORTEX therefore understands community not simply as a collection of shared facilities, but as something that can be encouraged through circulation and spatial proximity.
Sustainable Architecture Through Green and Blue Infrastructure
One of the strongest ideas visible throughout the proposal is the integration of natural systems with the architecture.
Water enters the development as an active spatial component rather than remaining at the edge of the site. Landscaped terraces descend toward waterways, while planted surfaces extend between the towers.
The proposal imagines water recreation as part of daily urban life, including activities such as kayaking and other forms of waterfront recreation.
This blue infrastructure is paired with extensive green spaces, gardens, terraces, and planted areas.
Together, these elements soften the boundaries between architecture and landscape.
The result reflects a broader principle of sustainable architecture: urban density does not necessarily have to eliminate direct contact with nature. Through careful planning, density and landscape can coexist vertically and horizontally.
Architecture Responding to the Rhythm of Water
The waterfront is also conceived as an environment capable of changing over time.
Project diagrams examine different conditions created by changing water levels. Rather than designing a rigid waterfront edge, the landscape responds to these fluctuations through stepped terraces and adaptable recreational zones.
During different tidal conditions, the relationship between water and landscape changes.
This creates an architecture that is not experienced as a static composition. Instead, inhabitants encounter a constantly shifting boundary between built form, land, and water.
Such adaptability strengthens the environmental character of the proposal.
It also reinforces the idea that sustainable architecture should respond to natural processes instead of attempting to completely separate buildings from them.
Designing for the Digital Nomad
Although its urban ambitions are substantial, VORTEX was developed specifically around the evolving lifestyle of the digital nomad.
The proposal recognizes that remote workers often require more than a conventional apartment. Their environment must accommodate concentration, collaboration, social interaction, recreation, and periods of retreat.
VORTEX distributes these experiences across multiple scales.
Private residential units provide spaces for focused work and individual living, while the central co-working environment supports professional activity outside the home.
Residents can therefore move between private and communal work environments according to their needs.
This flexibility challenges the increasingly outdated separation between residential and office architecture.
In VORTEX, work becomes embedded within everyday life without completely dominating it.


Flexible Residential Units for Living and Working
The residential designs reinforce this hybrid lifestyle.
The drawings illustrate compact single and double-occupancy configurations combining sleeping, storage, work, living, and service functions.
Some units introduce bedroom lofts, allowing the vertical dimension of the apartment to separate sleeping areas from working and living spaces.
Full-height glazing provides panoramic views while increasing daylight penetration.
Integrated workstations transform the residence into a viable place for remote professional activity, while small pantry and living facilities maintain residential independence.
The architecture therefore accommodates several interpretations of home.
A unit can function as a private retreat, temporary workspace, personal studio, or base from which residents access the wider VORTEX community.
Co-Working Spaces Designed Around Different Modes of Productivity
The co-working environment provides a second layer of professional infrastructure.
Rather than offering a single open-plan office, the project includes different working environments for different degrees of concentration and collaboration.
Individual workstations support everyday tasks. Quiet booths accommodate private calls and uninterrupted work. Breakout seating and casual discussion tables encourage conversation. Brainstorming corners facilitate collaborative sessions, while private and medium-sized office rooms provide more enclosed settings.
Office suites extend the range of possible professional arrangements.
This variety acknowledges a fundamental reality of contemporary work: productivity does not occur in one universal environment.
People alternate between concentration, discussion, presentation, collaboration, privacy, and informal exchange.
Architecture can support this pattern by providing spatial choice.
Daylight, Airflow and the Central Void
Environmental conditions are closely connected with VORTEX’s formal organization.
The opening created by the rotating building geometry functions as more than a visual gesture. It establishes a large central void capable of introducing daylight deeper into shared areas.
The separation and curvature of building masses also create opportunities for air movement through the development.
Sky gardens and outdoor terraces provide additional access to daylight, vegetation, views, and fresh air.
These features support one of the project’s central ambitions: allowing work environments to maintain continuous relationships with outdoor space.
A resident can move from concentrated work to an exterior terrace or garden without undertaking a long transition through the building.
This immediate connection between productivity and restoration becomes particularly important within the digital nomad lifestyle envisioned by the project.
Sky Bridges as Social Infrastructure
VORTEX uses elevated bridges to connect its different architectural volumes.
Rather than functioning only as efficient links, these bridges form another layer of shared urban space.
Moving between towers becomes an opportunity to encounter other inhabitants, experience landscape from different heights, and observe the water and communal spaces below.
This interconnected circulation reduces the sense that each tower operates independently.
The development instead begins to behave like a vertical neighborhood.
Such connectivity is essential to the project's interpretation of co-living architecture. Community does not depend solely on destination spaces such as lounges or cafés. It can also emerge along the routes connecting them.
Landscape Terraces and Elevated Gardens
Terracing plays a major role in reducing the separation between building and landscape.
The architecture incorporates open-air gardens at multiple levels, giving residents access to outdoor environments even high above the ground.
These spaces can support relaxation, informal meetings, social gatherings, or simply moments away from enclosed interiors.
At ground level, vegetation continues toward the water, allowing the landscape to become part of the waterfront experience.
The architecture therefore creates layers of nature rather than limiting greenery to a conventional podium or surrounding park.
This vertical distribution of landscape strengthens the project's identity as sustainable architecture while contributing to the quality of everyday living.
Reconsidering Singapore’s Garden City Identity
Singapore’s reputation as a Garden City provides an important cultural and urban context for VORTEX.
The project builds upon that identity but introduces a significant additional element: water.
By combining greenery and waterways within a dense mixed-use development, VORTEX proposes an interpretation of urban nature suited to Singapore’s southern waterfront.
The water channel becomes both a visual and organizational device, helping connect the site with the broader waterfront system.
Landscape, meanwhile, moves through the project horizontally and vertically.
The combination creates an urban environment where natural systems are not pushed outside the architecture. They become part of its structure.
Co-Living as an Urban Model
VORTEX also questions what co-living can mean at an architectural scale.
Many co-living models focus primarily on shared kitchens, lounges, or common rooms. Here, the concept expands to encompass an entire neighborhood-like ecosystem.
Living, working, learning, recreation, dining, landscape, movement, and social interaction coexist within one interconnected environment.
Private spaces remain available, but they are supported by extensive communal infrastructure.
This balance is particularly important for digital nomads, whose independence and mobility can sometimes reduce opportunities for sustained social interaction.
By directing residents toward a shared center and distributing communal environments throughout the complex, the project attempts to create conditions for spontaneous encounters and collaboration.
A Fluid Relationship Between Work and Leisure
One of VORTEX’s most compelling spatial ideas is the close proximity between productive and restorative environments.
A concentrated work session can be followed by time in a garden, beside the water, within a lounge, or across an outdoor terrace.
The architecture allows people to shift quickly between these environments.
This fluidity reflects changing attitudes toward work.
For a digital workforce, professional activity is increasingly detached from fixed office hours and conventional corporate buildings. The spaces supporting that work therefore need to become more diverse.
VORTEX responds by embedding professional infrastructure within a larger environment of nature, recreation, housing, and community.
A Vision for Future Sustainable Architecture
VORTEX ultimately proposes more than a striking tower composition.
It presents an argument about how future urban communities could function.
Instead of organizing cities through strict divisions between work, housing, recreation, and nature, the proposal interweaves them.
Its vortex geometry concentrates activity while simultaneously opening the project toward air, water, landscape, and views.
Its residential units accommodate changing relationships between home and work.
Its shared spaces encourage collaboration and community.
Its water channels connect daily life with the wider waterfront.
Its terraces and gardens introduce nature throughout a high-density development.
Together, these strategies demonstrate how sustainable architecture can address not only environmental concerns but also changing social and professional lifestyles.
VORTEX and the Future of Digital Nomad Living
As remote work continues to reshape how people understand home, workplace, and community, architectural typologies will also need to evolve.
VORTEX anticipates this transition by creating a place where those categories overlap.
The project does not ask inhabitants to choose between urban density and nature, or between professional productivity and personal wellbeing. Instead, it attempts to accommodate all of them within a single connected system.
Water becomes infrastructure and recreation. Greenery becomes landscape and social space. Circulation becomes an opportunity for interaction. Housing becomes capable of supporting work. Workplaces become connected to nature.
That integration gives VORTEX its strongest architectural identity.

Through its flowing form, interconnected community spaces, waterfront integration, co-working environments, landscaped terraces, and adaptable living units, VORTEX demonstrates how sustainable architecture could shape a new generation of urban co-living for digital nomads.
