Adaptive Reuse of India United Mills no. 2 & 3
Located in Mumbai's historic Girangaon district, the project reimagines India United Mills 2 & 3 as a productive public precinct. Through adaptive reuse, retained industrial structures are transformed into spaces for learning, cultural production, community engagement, and public interaction, preserving site's heritage while creating a vibrant civic center.

The site plan establishes a continuous public landscape that links retained mill structures with new civic and cultural programs. A network of courtyards, pathways, and open spaces guides movement through the precinct, encouraging exploration while revealing layers of the site's industrial past.
The ground floor activates the mill complex through workshops, production spaces, community facilities, and public programs. By concentrating making and learning activities at the pedestrian level, the proposal fosters interaction between creators, visitors, and the surrounding community.
The adaptive reuse strategy retains significant industrial structures while introducing carefully integrated contemporary interventions. New insertions accommodate learning, exhibition, and community functions, demonstrating how historic industrial infrastructure can be transformed into a productive public destination.
One arm of the double-helix ramp ascends toward the historic chimney, transforming an industrial landmark into a public viewing deck. The elevated route frames panoramic views of the mill precinct and surrounding city, offering a new perspective on the site's heritage.
The second arm of the ramp leads to flexible exhibition spaces that showcase craft, creative production, and community initiatives. By integrating exhibition spaces within the circulation network, the journey itself becomes a platform for learning and discovery.
Former industrial yards are reimagined as vibrant public spaces that support gathering, recreation, and community engagement. Framed by workshops, learning spaces, and cultural programs, these courtyards serve as the social heart of the revitalized mill precinct.
