I reinterpreted ekklesia, the origin of the word "church," in modern Japan, and developed a prototype church that would be a place of escape and gathering, where not only Christians but anyone can easily visit. In Nagasaki, I have planned an ekklesia centered around a choir stage and seating area that connects the community as one through Christian music.

The cultural center of traditional Japanese arts is a small town of craftsmen and artists, a so-called "The town under mushroom hats". This town consists from separate building that are of the same scale as the surrounded building of Akita.

The name of our project is Kibo no Sakura. Kibo meaning Hope and Sakura meaning Cherry Blossoms, the national flowers of Japan. Both these words really drive our project. Beyond the first shade of the site exits a far richer dynamic -of people living as family across a neighborhood. The preservation of this UNESCO site was only possible because of the bond between the villagers. My take is to present the unity and pride of Shirakawa Go while paying homage to its culture. This project doesn't exist without its people
