Dynamic Structures

Explore the dynamism in design through computation! Imagine a bridge that rolls open to allow boats to pass, or a furniture that transforms its shape to serve multiple functions. With the help of concepts such as origami, flat-packing and fast moving technologies, today it's possible to create such dynamic uitilities with the help of motors and actuators. This challenge invites architects, engineers, designers, and creators to explore the concept of dynamic movement in their designs. We challenge you to create products or structures that incorporate dynamic, adaptable, and transformative elements, pushing the boundaries of static design and embracing movement and change.

Participants should parametrize the dynamic movement in their structure that adapts and transform based on need. Your design should include elements of movement, flexibility, and adaptability, creating functional and visually stunning solutions.

Design Criteria:

  • Innovation & Movement: Your design must demonstrate creative use of dynamic movement. Elements should be adaptable, transformable, or movable to meet different needs and scenarios.
  • Functionality & Aesthetics: The design should be both highly functional and aesthetically pleasing, showcasing a modern and innovative approach.
  • Scalability: Your design can be of any scale, from large architectural structures to small-scale products. Ensure that the concept of dynamic movement is integral to the design.
  • Sustainability: Incorporate sustainable practices and materials in your design. Consider the environmental impact of the design’s dynamic elements and fabrication process.
  • Feasibility: Ensure that your design is practical and feasible, taking into account current fabrication and technological capabilities.

Examples to Inspire:

  • Transformative Furniture: Create a piece of furniture that can change its shape and function, such as a table that transforms into seating or a bookshelf that expands and contracts based on need.
  • Kinetic Sculpture: Develop a sculpture that moves and interacts with its environment, creating a visually captivating and dynamic art piece. An example is the Kinetic Rain sculpture at Changi Airport in Singapore, which consists of moving droplets that form various shapes.
  • Smart Canopy: Design a canopy that expands to provide shade and collects rainwater, showcasing how adaptable structures can enhance both functionality and sustainability.
  • Flexible Workspace Solutions: Develop modular office furniture systems that can be easily reconfigured to meet changing work demands and enhance collaboration, similar to the designs by Vitra and Herman Miller.

Selection Process:

  • The community will vote to shortlist the top 10 designs.
  • Shortlisted entries will proceed to Stage 2, where they will be asked to further detail their designs and prepare for fabrication.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Designs that push the boundaries of dynamic movement and adaptability..
  • Creative solutions that can be easily replicated and scaled, using common fabrication tools and technologies.
  • Designs that offer social value by addressing community needs, enhancing usability, or improving accessibility.
  • Use Beegraphy Model Viewer to express the dynamic parameter in your design.
