Anagram Coffee by Tristan & Ju: A Minimalist Coffee Experience in Singapore
Anagram Coffee in Singapore blends minimalist design with performance art, creating an intimate specialty coffee experience within a compact 350 ft² space
A Compact Yet Immersive Coffee Space
Located in the heart of Singapore, Anagram Coffee, designed by Tristan & Ju, redefines the coffee experience within a compact 350 ft² footprint. Completed in 2022, this project transforms a small space into a stage for specialty coffee, where craftsmanship and customer interaction take center stage.

Design Concept: Coffee as a Performance Art
The core design philosophy of Anagram Coffee revolves around presenting the art of coffee-making as a performance. To achieve this, the architects strategically placed the main coffee counter at the center of the space. Much like a thrust stage in a theater, this layout fosters an intimate connection between the barista and the customer, turning the act of coffee-making into a visual spectacle.
The counter, intentionally irregular in shape, features two raised platforms at its ends, serving as a bar and point-of-sale (POS) station. This unique design enhances customer engagement, making visitors active participants in the coffee-making process.

Maximizing Space with Thoughtful Design
Given the limited floor area, creative design solutions were employed to mitigate any sense of confinement. The existing high ceiling at the entrance was leveraged to incorporate an artificial skylight, simulating natural daylight and creating an inviting atmosphere. A suspended U-shaped ceiling frames the central area, cleverly concealing mechanical ductwork while enhancing spatial definition.
To further anchor the space, a dramatic paper lantern light is suspended above the bar, adding depth and visual interest. The seating layout was intentionally minimal, reinforcing the shop’s concept as a place to appreciate coffee, rather than a traditional lounge.

Sculptural Seating and Asymmetrical Balance
An askew, narrow built-in bench runs along one wall, paired with bespoke jagged stone tables, evoking an art gallery-like ambiance. These sculptural elements prioritize aesthetic appeal over comfort, aligning with the shop's minimalist philosophy. A mirrored working counter on the opposite wall introduces a subtle asymmetry, enhancing spatial balance while maximizing functionality.

Integrating Storage as a Design Feature
Storage solutions, essential in a compact space, were seamlessly integrated into the design. The walls conceal built-in storage units, varying in depth and texture to create a dynamic visual effect. Rustic window frames, backlit from within, introduce an element of curiosity and contrast against the otherwise neutral palette.

Materiality and Color Palette: A Subtle Contrast
A tone-on-tone neutral palette, accented with rust brown hues inspired by coffee, sets a calming ambiance. The interplay of textures—plastered walls mimicking granite and travertine, combined with natural stone counters—creates a refined, tactile experience. These elements harmonize to form a serene retreat, where every detail contributes to an immersive coffee experience.
A Masterpiece of Compact Design
Anagram Coffee by Tristan & Ju exemplifies how a small footprint can deliver a big impact. By transforming a modest space into an artistic performance hub, this coffee shop redefines the traditional café experience. Through strategic spatial planning, textural interplay, and interactive design, Anagram Coffee stands as a testament to minimalist yet highly functional architectural ingenuity.
