Ataraxia House by MEM Arquitectos: A Modern Tranquil House Design Rooted in Serenity
A serene modern house in Mexico designed for inner peace, using travertine, wood, and wabi-sabi aesthetics in harmony.
Introduction to Ataraxia House: A Sanctuary of Peace and Architecture
Located in Querétaro, Mexico, the Ataraxia House by MEM Arquitectos embodies the essence of modern tranquil house design. Rooted in the ancient Greek philosophy of “Ataraxia,” meaning imperturbability and inner peace, the residence becomes a spatial meditation on serenity and balance. Designed by Jorge Salgado and Erik Montejano, with interiors by MEKZA Estudio and landscaping by Entre Jardínes, the 450 m² home is crafted as a harmonious retreat from the chaos of daily life.

Ground Floor Layout: Seamless Living with Garden Integration
The ground floor unfolds from a subtle, elegant entrance hall that channels the flow of the home. An elevator, camouflaged within a refined wooden wall, signals the thoughtful integration of modern convenience and aesthetic subtlety. The large open kitchen flows into a pantry, laundry area, and service quarters, all of which connect directly to a garden-facing terrace. Adjacent lies a sunken living room and spacious dining area, both visually and physically tethered to the landscaped garden, encouraging conviviality and relaxation.

Upper Floor Design: Private Sanctuaries in Harmony with Nature
Upstairs, the master bedroom is a personal sanctuary. It includes a generous dressing room, a full bathroom, and even a sauna to enhance everyday wellness. Three additional bedrooms each include their own dressing rooms and bathrooms, echoing the home's emphasis on comfort and functionality. Every room maintains a clear visual connection to the outdoors, reinforcing the calm, retreat-like atmosphere of the home.

Architectural Materiality: Travertine Marble and Timeless Elegance
The façade, adorned in travertine marble, delivers a timeless and natural warmth. This choice of material not only complements the simplicity of the architectural lines but also fosters a fluid dialogue with the surrounding environment. The material palette extends indoors, where neutral tones, marble details, and wooden flooring resonate with the peaceful wabi-sabi philosophy—embracing imperfections and aging with grace.

Wabi-Sabi Interior Philosophy: Simplicity with Soul
Inside, the design leans into wabi-sabi aesthetics—celebrating modesty, imperfection, and raw beauty. Custom-designed furniture pieces speak a quiet sophistication, with soft textures and organic materials that elevate the tactile experience of the interiors. Light flows freely across large, open spaces, emphasizing a sense of airiness and openness. The minimalist design does not equate to coldness; instead, it nurtures comfort, calm, and emotional warmth.

Landscape and Garden: Low-Maintenance, High-Impact Tranquility
The landscaped garden uses native, low-maintenance plants, preserving sustainability while enhancing sensory connection with nature. Every view from the interior becomes a framed moment of outdoor serenity, blending the interior architecture seamlessly with its natural surroundings.

A Home for the Soul: Architecture as Emotional Nourishment
Ataraxia House transcends the idea of a mere residence. It becomes a curated space for emotional and spiritual nourishment. Through its careful orchestration of space, materials, and light, it offers a refuge where balance, beauty, and peace coexist. MEM Arquitectos have crafted more than a house—they have built a philosophy into structure.
