Brixen Public Library: A Harmonious Blend of Historic and Contemporary Architecture
Exploring the architectural fusion of historic preservation and modern design in Brixen Public Library by Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli.
The Brixen Public Library, designed by the architectural firm Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli, stands as a testament to the seamless integration of historic preservation and modern design. Located near the Duomo in Brixen, Italy, this public institution, founded in 1984, houses over 36,000 books and serves as a cultural cornerstone for the Isarco Valley community.

Architectural Vision and Design Philosophy
The architects, Michel Carlana, Luca Mezzalira, and Curzio Pentimalli, envisioned the library not merely as a repository of books but as a dynamic space fostering human interaction and cultural exchange. Their design introduces a new structure that connects and revitalizes existing historic buildings: the former Finance Office, parts of the old Courthouse, and sections of the ex-Prison. This fusion creates a cohesive complex that respects the site's historical context while addressing contemporary needs.

Structural Composition and Spatial Dynamics
Central to the design is the new building, conceptualized as a "tree" with concrete "branches" extending towards the adjacent historic structures. This metaphorical "Kulturbaum" (tree of culture) establishes a continuous dialogue between the old and the new. The building's layout features a double-layered perimeter: an external concrete shell and an internal wooden paneling. This design houses essential services—such as vertical circulation, restrooms, and integrated furniture—within the walls, allowing for open, flexible interior spaces free from structural constraints.

Integration of Historic Structures
The project meticulously restores and incorporates the existing buildings:
- Former Finance Office: Serving as a primary entrance from Piazza Duomo, it includes an infotheque, borrowing services, and administrative offices.
- Old Courthouse: Hosts areas dedicated to children, youth, and music, featuring spaces like playrooms and multipurpose rooms.
- Ex-Prison: Contains passage galleries and auxiliary rooms, thoughtfully repurposed to enhance the library's functionality.

The design addresses slight elevation differences between these structures by incorporating gentle slopes in the connecting "branches," ensuring seamless transitions and accessibility throughout the complex.

Lighting and Interior Ambiance
Natural light plays a pivotal role in the library's atmosphere. The south-facing wall remains solid to prevent direct sunlight, featuring an interior "bookcase wall" that spans the building's height, symbolizing a repository of knowledge. Distinctive "erker" bay windows, inspired by traditional designs, offer panoramic views of Brixen's landmarks, including the White Tower and the Cathedral's bell tower. Additionally, strategically placed skylights allow sunlight to permeate the building's core, enhancing the reading and gathering spaces with a warm, inviting glow.

Awards and Recognition
The Brixen Public Library has garnered significant accolades for its architectural excellence:
- 2022: Awarded Gold in the Best Architects 23 Award.
- 2023: Received the Architekturpreis Südtirol in the "Public" category.

These honors reflect the project's success in blending historical preservation with innovative design, creating a space that resonates with both the past and the present.

The Brixen Public Library exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can bridge eras, fostering community engagement and cultural enrichment. Through the harmonious integration of historic structures and contemporary design elements, Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli has crafted a space that not only serves as a repository of knowledge but also as a vibrant communal hub, reflecting the rich heritage and dynamic spirit of Brixen.
