Located in Vietnam, CieL Dining is a fine-dining restaurant that presents an innovative architectural approach to dining spaces. Designed by Eigh-T Architects, this restaurant offers a unique culinary experience with a design rooted in geometric form and the idea of space-defamiliarization. The architecture takes cues from the sky, with the name "CieL" derived from the French word for "sky," and blends modern structural forms with organic elements. The restaurant is a testament to the fusion of function and aesthetics, offering diners an immersive environment where architecture and gastronomy coexist harmoniously.

The Concept: Defamiliarizing Traditional Design

CieL Dining's architectural concept revolves around reinterpreting a traditional pitched-roof structure. The roof's lowest point is directed toward the entrance, creating an intimate atmosphere while maintaining an open, airy feeling. This reorientation leads to a five-sided geometric form that challenges conventional design. The building's structure allows visitors to experience multiple views simultaneously, creating a dynamic spatial relationship. By using this angular design, the restaurant forms a dialogue between the exterior and the interior, guiding the visitor's gaze outward while offering a secluded yet expansive interior experience.

Exterior Design: A Geometric Exploration

The geometry of CieL Dining's exterior is a defining feature of its design. The exterior is shaped to create an immersive experience from the outside, where the chamfered form of the building extends and contracts. This three-dimensional exterior offers varying perspectives depending on the viewer's position. Visitors can see three faces of the building at once, which increases their connection to both the structure and the neighborhood surrounding it. The interplay of geometries between the slanted roof and angular walls creates an aesthetic tension, while the warm oak doors and plywood panels at the recessed entrance introduce a tactile contrast, adding warmth to the otherwise austere exterior.

Interior Design: A Spatial Journey

Inside the restaurant, the space is dominated by a central cylindrical structure known as the Oculus. Positioned at the heart of the ground floor, this tilted 12-degree cylinder serves as the focal point of the design. It elongates the light well, bathing the space in natural light throughout the day. The Oculus offers a unique visual experience and is central to the dining experience at CieL Dining. The design of the interior space revolves around this cylinder, which defines the atmosphere and spatial perception within the restaurant.

Dining Experience: Engaging with the Culinary Process

The dining experience at CieL Dining is enhanced by the restaurant's unique layout and kitchen design. The ground floor features a counter dining area with an open kitchen that allows diners to observe the chefs at work. Two islands in the kitchen serve as both display and warm-up stations, where guests can watch the chefs carefully prepare and plate each dish. Throughout the day, sunlight floods the interior, particularly around the kitchen area.
