Kınık Olive Agricultural Production, Processing & Storage Facility: A Modern Hub for Sustainable Agriculture
Modern, sustainable olive oil facility in Kınık, Turkey, by Studio Evren Başbuğ, blends bold design with rural harmony.
Kınık Olive Facility
The Kınık Olive Agricultural Production, Processing & Storage Facility is a state-of-the-art structure designed to support sustainable agriculture in Kınık, a picturesque district near İzmir, Turkey. Completed in 2023 by Studio Evren Başbuğ, this 450-square-meter facility revolutionizes the way olives are processed and stored while blending modern design principles with the rustic charm of the surrounding olive groves.

Architectural Design: A Minimalist and Functional Approach
Steel Structural System and Raised Platform
At its core, the facility’s architecture focuses on simplicity and efficiency. Constructed with a steel structural system elevated on a raised platform, the building maximizes functionality while preserving the natural terrain. The use of durable materials ensures longevity and reduces maintenance needs, making it an ideal structure for agricultural operations.

Reverse-Sloping Roof: A Distinctive Feature
One of the standout features of the Kınık Olive facility is its reverse-sloping roof. This bold geometric element not only enhances the building's aesthetic appeal but also improves water runoff management. The roof’s angular form is mirrored in the façade design, creating a cohesive and modern industrial aesthetic.

Materials and Environmental Integration
Galvanized Panels Reflect Nature
The exterior of the building features galvanized trapezoidal panels that reflect sunlight, changing appearance throughout the day. This dynamic interaction with light allows the structure to visually harmonize with the olive groves. Despite its contemporary design, the building blends into the rural environment, sometimes appearing almost invisible against the backdrop of dense vegetation.

Local Materials and Labor
In keeping with its commitment to sustainability, the project prioritized the use of local materials and labor. This approach not only reduced transportation emissions but also supported the local economy. The construction cost was kept to an impressive 3,300,000 TRL ($167,000), demonstrating that thoughtful design can be both economical and impactful.

Functionality: Enhancing the Olive Oil Production Process
Processing and Production Capacities
Designed to streamline agricultural operations, the facility has a daily processing capacity of 80 tons of olives and can produce 20 tons of olive oil. These capabilities significantly enhance the productivity of local olive farmers, enabling them to deliver high-quality products to the market.

Supporting the Local Circular Economy
This facility works in tandem with a nearby milk processing plant, also developed by the same cooperative. Together, these two facilities form a cornerstone of the circular economy in Kınık, providing local producers with opportunities to create value-added products and improve their market conditions.

Sustainability as a Design Principle
Efficient Use of Resources
The building’s design minimizes material use and complexity, reducing waste during construction. By focusing on cost-effective solutions, Studio Evren Başbuğ demonstrated how sustainable architecture can thrive in industrial contexts.

A Building That Dissolves into the Landscape
Through its thoughtful material palette and innovative design, the Kınık Olive facility avoids dominating its environment. Instead, it becomes a part of the natural landscape, reflecting the ethos of sustainability and harmony with nature.

The Kınık Olive Agricultural Production, Processing & Storage Facility is a shining example of how architecture can serve the dual purposes of function and aesthetics. By combining modern design, sustainable practices, and local economic support, Studio Evren Başbuğ has created a facility that stands as a model for future agricultural developments in Turkey and beyond.
