Lumintu House, designed by Realrich Architecture Workshop, is a groundbreaking example of sustainable tropical architecture. Located in Indonesia, this 898 m² residence seamlessly integrates passive cooling strategies, cultural philosophies, and innovative craftsmanship to create a comfortable, environmentally responsive living space.

A Climate-Responsive Architectural Approach Lumintu House is designed to adapt to the tropical climate, maintaining an optimal indoor temperature of 27°C without excessive reliance on artificial cooling. The strategic placement of openable steel fins on the west and south façades facilitates natural ventilation, while an active fan and wind tunnel reduce humidity through an air-stacking effect. These passive strategies significantly enhance thermal comfort, reducing energy consumption.

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Integration The house blurs the boundary between interior and exterior spaces through a 3.5-meter extended canopy, providing shaded outdoor areas reminiscent of sitting under a tree. This design element not only enhances human comfort but also protects surrounding vegetation from excessive sunlight. The 11-meter column-free span of the main living area fosters openness, while the inner courtyard and wind tunnel ensure constant airflow, reinforcing the house’s bioclimatic efficiency.

Sustainable Materiality and Craftsmanship Lumintu House is a testament to the artistry of skilled craftsmen. Each steel component is meticulously hand-bent, while the concrete catenary structures reference Plato’s cave metaphor, shaping both the aesthetic and structural integrity of the home. The use of locally sourced materials, combined with an air gap between the roof and floor plates, optimizes cross-ventilation and prevents heat accumulation.

Cultural Philosophy and Spatial Organization The name “Lumintu” signifies continuity and flow, reflecting the house’s seamless spatial transitions. The ground floor accommodates communal areas, including a living room, dining space, and guest quarters, while the upper floor houses three bedrooms, a home office, and a gymnasium. A rooftop garden serves as a private retreat, further reinforcing the integration of nature into the built environment.
