An Architectural Tribute to History and Culture

Nestled on the bustling Hai Ba Trung Street in Ho Chi Minh City, Ola Hale Restaurant & Bar offers a unique blend of Vietnamese modernist architecture and Hawaiian hospitality. Designed by CHIO Architects and Baris Arch | DX, this 688 m² space overlooks the iconic pink Tan Dinh Church, seamlessly integrating cultural heritage with contemporary dining experiences.

The restaurant is housed in a Southern Vietnamese modernist structure, carefully selected to embody the brand's philosophy of preserving history. A green front yard, partially enclosed by concrete-brick walls, creates a welcoming transition from the vibrant street into the warm and inviting interior. Inspired by the Hawaiian word “ʻohana”, meaning family or home, Ola Hale strives to make every visitor feel as if they are returning to a familiar and comforting space.

An Immersive Cultural Experience

Ola Hale is more than just a dining destination—it is a sensory journey through Vietnamese and Hawaiian traditions. Guests are greeted at the ground-floor bar, reminiscent of Vietnamese hospitality customs. As they ascend to the first-floor dining area, they gather around meals, deepening connections in a setting designed to foster togetherness. The experience culminates at the intimate rooftop bar, where dim lighting and a sculptural ceiling evoke the sound of ocean waves, offering a tranquil escape in the heart of Saigon. The open-air balcony on the second floor provides a breathtaking view of the Tan Dinh Church, making it an ideal spot for an alfresco experience.

Design Elements Rooted in Tradition

Every detail within Ola Hale tells a story of cultural fusion, with materials and craftsmanship that celebrate both Vietnamese and Hawaiian artistry:

  • Authentic Hawaiian surfboards were imported to infuse the space with island energy.
  • Woven rattan walls, inspired by Vietnamese fishing tools (Nơm and Thời), add layers of tradition.
  • Bien Hoa ceramic vases, a symbol of Vietnamese heritage, enhance the earthy aesthetic.
  • A hand-crafted blue brick bar, shaped like ocean waves, reflects the raw beauty of Vietnamese architecture.

Artisanal Craftsmanship & Personalized Interiors

The furniture at Ola Hale is custom-designed to evoke a sense of home. From handwoven bamboo partitions to the imperfectly square Ohana table, every element was crafted by skilled Vietnamese artisans who deeply understand the cultural significance behind their work.

The restaurant also features mural paintings by emerging artists, depicting the synergy between Vietnam and Hawaii. Vibrant artworks include:

  • A Hawaiian woman embracing nature, symbolizing the island’s deep connection to the environment.
  • Dynamic ocean waves, capturing the spirit of island life.
  • Lush tropical forests, showcasing the biodiversity of both Vietnam and Hawaii.

A Lush Green Sanctuary in the City

Greenery plays a vital role in Ola Hale’s design, blending Vietnamese tropical flora with Hawaiian botanical elements. The landscaping features dong, banana, and monstera leaves, creating a verdant backdrop for vivid tropical flowers such as Porcelain blossoms and banana flowers.

One of the most striking natural elements is a 42-year-old bougainvillea tree, which not only adds to the aesthetic charm but also softens the architectural lines of the building.
