Raj Sabhagruh Discourse Hall – A Spiritual Landmark by Serie Architects
Raj Sabhagruh Discourse Hall by Serie Architects is a stunning spiritual landmark, blending Jain architectural heritage with modern, sustainable design.
A Modern Interpretation of Jain Architectural Heritage
The Raj Sabhagruh Discourse Hall, designed by Serie Architects, is the centerpiece of the Shrimad Rajchandra Ashram in Dharampur, Gujarat. Completed in 2024, this architectural marvel reinterprets the Jain Samavasaran, a sacred temple concept, through contemporary design principles. The 40-meter-tall structure sits atop a crescent-shaped 60-meter hill, serving as a beacon of spiritual learning and meditation.

Innovative Design Inspired by Sacred Geometry
The discourse hall comprises 13 stacked rooms, each rotated 45 degrees, creating an interlocking structure of curved concrete sheer walls. The design draws inspiration from Jain temples, where shikaras (pyramid-like towers) symbolize an ascension toward enlightenment. Perforated concrete walls allow natural light to illuminate the interior, enhancing the tranquil ambiance.

Multifunctional Spaces for Learning and Meditation
The Raj Sabhagruh Discourse Hall accommodates:
- A 5,000-seat circular auditorium with column-free interiors, designed for spiritual discourses and gatherings.
- A 1,000-square-meter museum, offering experiential learning through interactive exhibits.
- Dedicated classrooms for deep study and reflection.
- A 300-seat meditation hall, located at the building’s apex, creating a journey from speech to silence.

Structural Brilliance and Sustainable Materials
The auditorium features four intersecting concrete arches, spanning a 54-meter diameter, forming a column-free space. Its ceiling is adorned with concentric timber acoustic baffles, echoing the radial patterns found in traditional Jain Maha-mandapas. The meditation hall, perched atop the structure, glows like a lantern, with over 1,000 pinpoints of light etched into its marbled surface.
The exterior is clad in hand-chiseled Makrana white marble bricks, repurposed from discarded slabs, reinforcing sustainability and cost-efficiency. Over 800,000 bricks were meticulously placed, giving the façade a textured, luminous quality, evolving with the sun’s movement.

A Harmonious Integration with Nature
The discourse hall is part of an expansive spiritual complex, connected to:
- A large plaza, featuring concentric white marble rings that reflect heat and provide shaded walkways.
- A 5,000-seat open-air amphitheater, designed for community events and religious ceremonies.
- A sacred grove of 108 ancient tree species, forming a tranquil retreat for meditation.
A Lasting Symbol of Spiritual Growth
Serie Architects, led by Christopher Lee and Kapil Gupta, collaborated closely with Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji to create an architecture that is contemporary, timeless, and deeply rooted in Jain philosophy. The Raj Sabhagruh Discourse Hall stands as a testament to spiritual enlightenment, fostering a space for knowledge, meditation, and inner peace.
