A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Modernity in Dezful, Iran

The Dezful House, designed by Mohsen Kazemianfard and Parima Jahangard of Fundamental Approach Architects, is a contemporary reinterpretation of Iran’s rich architectural heritage. Completed in 2024, the 420 m² residence is located within the dense urban fabric of Dezful. At the end of a narrow alley and surrounded by neighboring buildings, this single-family home transforms constraints into opportunities by embracing traditional Iranian courtyard architecture in a modern context.

The Vision Behind the Dezful House

Historically, Iranian homes have been more than shelters—they are sanctuaries for family life, reflection, and connection with nature. The Dezful House reflects these principles, emphasizing inward-focused design to create a tranquil refuge amidst the bustling city. Originally conceived as a multi-story apartment for investment purposes, the architects convinced the client to prioritize architectural quality, privacy, and security by constructing a single-family residence.

The Heart of the Home: The Central Courtyard

At the core of the Dezful House lies a bright circular courtyard, a contemporary adaptation of the archetypal feature in Iranian architecture. This courtyard is the soul of the home, seamlessly connecting interior and exterior spaces. Arranged around this central void are the living areas, each bathed in natural light and oriented to maximize views of the lush courtyard greenery.

The courtyard functions as more than a visual centerpiece—it serves as a climatic and social hub. Its circular shape casts dynamic shadows on the walls, creating a poetic interplay of light and time. The verandas on the second floor, semi-open and flexible in purpose, bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor living, offering spaces for spontaneous activities and relaxation.

Passive Cooling and Sustainable Design

In Dezful’s hot and semi-arid climate, the Dezful House employs ingenious passive cooling techniques rooted in traditional Iranian architecture. Openings positioned opposite each other facilitate cross-ventilation, while the courtyard’s greenery and central pool enhance airflow and moisture. This natural cooling system reduces reliance on artificial climate control, ensuring comfort while maintaining sustainability.

The circular ceilings further contribute to the house’s climate responsiveness. By increasing shade in the semi-open spaces, these ceilings make the verandas more habitable during the day. The interplay of curved and straight forms also enriches the spatial experience, creating a sense of tranquility.
