In 2023, the city of Prague unveiled a remarkable new addition to its architectural landscape — the Štvanice Footbridge, a graceful pedestrian and cyclist bridge designed by Atelier Bridge Structures and Blank Architekti s.r.o. Realized through an international competition organized by the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague, this contemporary structure elegantly connects the bustling urban districts of Holešovice and Karlín with the tranquil Štvanice Island.

A Dynamic, Fluid Form Inspired by Movement

Designed by Petr Tej, Marek Blank, and Jan Mourek, the Štvanice Footbridge captures the natural rhythm of human movement through its gentle, spatial curve. The bridge was conceived as a seamless, flowing pathway, responding subtly and respectfully to the historic panorama of Prague and the ever-changing dynamics of pedestrian and cyclist traffic along the Vltava River.

The bridge’s alignment intentionally mirrors the organic edge of Štvanice Island, ensuring a natural transition between land and structure. On the Holešovice side, a gently descending span offers a barrier-free connection to the existing embankment, enhancing accessibility for all users.

Engineering Innovation: Ultra-High Performance Materials and Flood Protection

Structurally, the footbridge is a testament to cutting-edge engineering and material innovation. Supported by two abutments on the embankments, two piers at the edges of Štvanice Island, and two piers in the unnavigable branch of the Vltava, the bridge’s design ensures both strength and elegance.

Constructed from ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC), the bridge exudes a luminous, marble-like finish. Its primary structure is a continuous reinforced concrete beam featuring longitudinal prestressing and an H-shaped cross-section. The system comprises two full-walled side parapet beams joined by a central deck plate, all supported by transverse ribs. This complex structure was realized using 57 precast segments, expertly fabricated and assembled to achieve the bridge’s fluid form.

A crucial innovation is the integration of a hydraulic piston mechanism at the support point on the Holešovice side. This system allows the end span to be lifted vertically during extreme flood events, providing protection up to the Q1000 flood level — a necessary adaptation for a river as dynamic as the Vltava.

Art and Craftsmanship: Sculptural Details Enhance the Journey

Beyond its impressive engineering, the Štvanice Footbridge is enriched with thoughtful artistic details. The handrails feature integrated lighting, ensuring safe nighttime passage while maintaining the bridge's clean, minimalist aesthetic. At both ends of the bridge, bronze ornamental handles adorned with figural animal motifs — created by sculptor Aleš Hvízdal — add a tactile, narrative element to the crossing experience.

At the entrance to the footbridge on Štvanice Island, visitors are welcomed by The River, a striking figural sculpture by renowned artist Jan Hendrych, celebrating the life and spirit of the Vltava River itself.

A New Urban Landmark for Prague

Blending architectural sensitivity, engineering excellence, and artistic craftsmanship, the Štvanice Footbridge is more than just infrastructure — it is a living part of Prague’s urban identity. It provides an important functional link while offering a contemplative, aesthetic experience that resonates with the history, landscape, and daily life of the city.

As Prague continues to evolve, the Štvanice Footbridge stands as a beautiful symbol of the city’s commitment to thoughtful, human-centered urban development — a bridge not just between places, but between tradition and innovation.
