The Best Cross-over in the History of TV
A reimagination of the the set of FRIENDS when one additional cast member from another beloved TV series - Sheldon Lee Cooper from Big Bang Theory - joins Monica and Rachel to live in the same apartment.
Possessing a fierce love for TV series F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and Big Bang Theory, I have also dreamt many times about the the iconic cross-over of the two cast groups and have wondered how many sparks could be generated. Both TV series are extremely popular and as they were aired at different periods of time, the anticipated cross-over never happened.
Client Analysis
A detailed study of the characters were done to familiarize myself with their daily actions, necessary devices and mandatory routines. A speculation of how these characters will react amidst the pandemic also gave rise to interesting outcomes.
Surprisingly, there were characters like Monica and Sheldon that actually match. Sheldon is very germophobic and Monica loves to clean. This is already a fantastic duo. However, both their competitive attitudes may harm the intimacy of their relationship.
As Sheldon is a physicist and also a nerd who loves comic books, various bookshelves have been added to fit his need for storing Physics books as well as storing his beloved mint comic books. As Sheldon hates change, the goal of this project is to minimize differences between the two apartments while accommodating the needs of all the characters. For Sheldon's bedroom, it is almost a direct replica from his former bedroom to ensure that Sheldon doesn't feel uneasy due to a change in the familiar components of his safe space.
Design Investigation Methods
The investigation method of this project revolved around re-watching both series and highlighting the details of the set design. While further acknowledging the characters' personality, the frequency of the usage of the props on set is also taken into account in order to decide whether or not it should be added into the new layout. Envisioning conversations between Sheldon and different friends in my head also helps pin point what kind of components will be needed on set if such occasion arise.
Materiality and Colors
The difference between material and colors for the two sets varies hugely. It is understandable as the two TV series come from different times, depict different events and portray different characters. The colors from Monica's apartment is more lively and designed, which is reflected in Monica's character with superior taste in cleaning and organizing furniture. For Big Bang Theory, the main apartment is a boys' apartment, and to add to that, nerdy boys' apartment. It is understandable that scientific minds do not care that much about interior design and color juxtaposition and therefore, the color tone for Sheldon and Leonard's apartment is mostly earthy tones - a more plain color theme when compared to Monica and Rachel's.
Objectives
The main objective of this project, apart from reimagining the living space of Monica, Rachel and Sheldon, is to consider that it is a filming set. Camera angles have to be contemplated as each room is another set which requires additional shots. The location of Sheldon's room in the new apartment is iterated multiple times to arrive to the conclusion of flipping the original layout. That way, the room can have a window, not be interrupted by the existing balcony and still makes sense as a regular floor plan.
