AME Studio by BetweenSpaces: A Refined Statement in Modern Studio Architecture in India
An architecturally refined studio in India blending art, light, and material to shape a timeless creative environment.
A Sculptural Space That Embodies Art, Craft, and Contemporary Design
Located in India and designed by BetweenSpaces, AME Studio is a powerful example of modern studio architecture in India that intertwines spatial clarity with material elegance. Conceived for a multifaceted artist, this 5,310-square-foot space gracefully balances utility with adaptability, enabling it to house a jacquard loom, a private studio, a boutique, a gallery, and more—while remaining open to future functions like exhibitions, workshops, and collaborations.

Crafting a Spatial Experience Beyond Function
The vision for AME Studio transcended the client's initial brief. The architects aimed to create a space that was more than a container for creative work; it was designed as an evolving, living environment. A monolithic, stone-clad form that appears grounded yet light hovers above the landscape, conveying permanence without heaviness. Timber and glass fenestration subtly soften the concrete mass, allowing transparency and natural light to enrich the interiors.

Strategic Orientation for Light and Function
Oriented along the east-west axis, the studio maximizes daylight through its north and south façades. This strategic layout aligns a linear spatial progression from the eastern entrance to the western private workspace. The flow is intuitive and uninterrupted, reinforcing the meditative and creative essence of the space. A dramatic 40-foot form-finished concrete wall runs alongside a reflecting water body, culminating in a serene open-air theatre at the southeast corner.

Material Palette Rooted in Tactility and Simplicity
The studio’s external shell is clad in narrow, neutral-toned natural stone strips, lending the structure a tactile yet monolithic identity. Sleek metal doors and wooden-framed windows articulate a refined rhythm, while whitewashed interiors offer a serene backdrop to the owner's craftwork and gallery displays. Form-finished concrete slabs hover above entrances, echoing the balance between structure and lightness.

A Studio That Encourages Movement and Reflection
The main double-height weaving space—measuring 20 by 40 feet—anchors the interior and serves as a central hub of activity. A cantilevered concrete staircase on the western edge leads to the upper-level personal studio and painting gallery. This space opens onto a deck, further blurring the lines between interior and exterior. The journey through the studio is guided by a flowing white marble inlay across the terrazzo floor, reminiscent of handwoven fabric and adding a poetic rhythm to one’s movement.

Immersed in Nature, Defined by Sustainability
Landscaped with tropical plants and large-leafed flora, the building’s periphery is softened, integrating nature as part of the architectural expression. Large cantilevered slabs extend into garden beds and deck areas, while skylights introduce diffused light into core areas, minimizing the need for artificial lighting. The studio employs locally sourced materials—natural stone, timber, terrazzo, and glass—and incorporates rainwater harvesting, making sustainability an intrinsic aspect of the project.

A Studio That Embodies Artistic Identity
AME Studio is not simply a container for creative pursuits; it becomes an extension of the owner's artistic identity. Every spatial transition, material junction, and light aperture speaks to a deep commitment to craft and contemplation. The architecture quietly asserts itself—not as a backdrop—but as an integral partner in the creative journey.

Lasting Architectural Impact Through Timeless Design
By merging bold formal gestures with restrained materiality, BetweenSpaces has created a studio that evolves with its occupant. AME Studio is a timeless expression of modern studio architecture in India—where light, texture, and structure choreograph a space that is simultaneously grounded and transcendent.
