Preserving Tradition Through Contemporary Architecture

Located in a serene village near Hanoi, the Đạo Mẫu Museum, designed by ARB Architects, stands as a testament to the enduring values of Đạo Mẫu, a deeply rooted spiritual belief in Vietnamese culture. Spanning 5,500 square meters, this museum is thoughtfully integrated into a 50-year-old orchard, preserving the site's natural landscape while blending traditional materials with modern design.

Architectural Vision: Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future

The design philosophy behind the Đạo Mẫu Museum prioritizes preservation and sustainability. The architects and the homeowner made a collective decision to retain all existing elements “rooted in the ground”, including century-old trees, the original house, the garden fence, and gate pillars. However, structures “not touching the ground”, such as the gate wings, were thoughtfully reimagined, and potted bonsai trees were relocated to new homes.

The old house underwent a transformation, with its mezzanine removed to create a spacious gallery for displaying paintings and artifacts related to Đạo Mẫu. Surrounding the original structure, new functional blocks were carefully arranged, including accommodation areas, an art gallery, and a communal kitchen. The design approach ensures minimal disturbance to the existing landscape, maintaining harmony between the museum and its natural surroundings.

Sustainable Materials: Breathing New Life into History

A defining feature of this project is its use of reclaimed clay tiles, sourced from historic homes in the region. With rapid urbanization reshaping Vietnam’s architectural identity, many traditional tiled-roof structures are being replaced with modern materials. By integrating these antique tiles into a contemporary design, ARB Architects create a bridge between past and present, allowing visitors to experience the essence of Vietnam’s spiritual and architectural heritage.

A Cultural Experience Inspired by Sacred Rituals

"The idea of using old tiles stems from my memories of votive dance ceremonies," shares Nguyễn Hà of ARB Architects. "The sacred atmosphere, the incense smoke, the filtered light through temple roofs, and the harmonious convergence of music, dance, and spiritual offerings inspired this architectural composition."

Through the preservation and adaptive reuse of traditional materials, the Đạo Mẫu Museum embodies a cultural journey—one that safeguards Vietnam’s spiritual traditions and architectural legacy for future generations.
