AS WE SPEAK
MUSEUM OF LANGUAGE
Brief description of the building in terms of purpose and function
A building is designed in the locality, which represents the Museum of Languages. Functional use will consist of two parts. The first is the part of the building, which will primarily serve as an exhibition space. The second part of the building will form a multifunctional hall. The connecting area will consist of a lobby, where in addition to the reception there will be a café with a shop. In the underground floor there will be the economic background of the building together with the administration. There will be a garden on the roof.
Urban integration of the building into the territory
The solved building is located in Poland in Bialystok. The surrounding building consists largely of apartment and family houses. Government offices and the Philharmonic are also nearby. The property is approximately 1.6 miles from the city centre. The proposed building was placed sensitively with an emphasis on the surrounding trees found on the plot. The building is placed axial on the plot and does not disturb the surroundings with its shape or material base. A parking lot is proposed for the premises, which is located on the SV part of the plot.
Architectural and artistic solution
The inspiration for the project was the biblical story of the Babylon Tower. This theme has been transformed within the object into a form of ramps that tend to rise or decrease. The basic object is based on the blocks. A ramp was then cut out of it, which revolves around it and has the character of a climb. It is my task to bring visitors to the building to the garden of eden, which is located on the roof of the building. According to the function, the basic shape was divided into three parts, representing: exhibition spaces, entrance hall and multifunctional hall. In the exhibition area there is a counterpoint of the exterior ramp. This space is divided into six elevation levels and is connected by a ramp and tends to decrease. The proposal considered approximately eight different variants. The resulting model was chosen due to the simplicity of the shape and was complemented by a ramp staircase that revolves around the object. The material for the construction was chosen monothematic, namely reinforced concrete, which will be supplemented with glazed surfaces. The word "bridge" will be printed in all languages into the façade. The idea of choosing this word was a symbol of connecting people using language. The inspiration was precisely the politically neutral language Esperanto, whose idea when teaching the language is to meet halfway, as it is not a mother tongue of any nationality.
Layout solution
The main input to the object is from the SE side. Behind it is a spacious lobby, which houses the reception, dressing room, café, and access to the multifunctional hall and exhibition area. The underground part consists of premises used for the operation of the whole building, together with administration and social facilities for visitors. On the second floor there is a room belonging to the multifunctional hall, which can be used as a separate conference hall, alternatively as a loggia. On the third floor there is the entrance to the main entrance to the exhibition area. There is a garden on the roof of the property. It can be reached, either by means of an elevator from the lobby or by means of a ramp staircase, located in the exterior part of the building.
