A Brooklyn Brownstone Transformed into a Playful Yet Sophisticated Urban Oasis

Olbos Studio unveils a striking renovation of a historic late-1800s townhouse in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. This vibrant architectural transformation respects the original character of the brownstone while reimagining its interiors to reflect the dynamic lifestyle and creative personalities of its cosmopolitan owners—a Singaporean lawyer with a flair for tattoos and a Hong Kong-born strategist with a background in fine arts.

The result is an intimate, expressive home where bold colors, refined craftsmanship, and clever architectural interventions harmonize in a carefully orchestrated dialogue between past and present.

Light-Filled Interiors Anchored by Artistic Narratives

The renovation preserves the original open-plan layout of the parlor floor, maximizing natural light that flows in from both the front and rear facades. The design cleverly capitalizes on the townhouse’s rare, soaring ceilings, creating an uplifting spatial experience that is both elegant and inviting.

Upon entering through the vestibule, visitors are welcomed into a colorful dining area where sculptural lighting and rich textiles set the tone. At the heart of this space is Party of Six, an abstract painting by homeowner Jenny Chow. The artwork captures a convivial dining scene, setting the stage for the home’s underlying narrative—conversation, creativity, and connection.

Structural Challenges Inspire Architectural Innovation

During early design stages, Olbos Studio discovered that previous renovations had compromised the building’s structural integrity. Undersized joists required a full structural intervention, which the architects cleverly disguised within a dramatic, custom-designed floor-to-ceiling bookcase.

Crafted in black Valchromat—a highly durable, color-dyed MDF—the bespoke bookshelf not only conceals vertical supports from basement to roof but also introduces a bold architectural feature that grounds the living room. Flanked by terrazzo partitions that echo the vibrant kitchen finishes, the structure becomes a symbolic spine of the home—functional, aesthetic, and deeply integrated.

A Living Room of Texture, Color, and Contrast

In the living room, furniture selections amplify the interior’s eclectic spirit. A plush blue Camaleonda sofa by B&B Italia is offset by a cheerful yellow Roly Poly armchair, creating a playful chromatic contrast. A mirrored coffee table reflects the color palette, amplifying light and energy. Overhead, the iconic Tobia floor lamp by Foscarini playfully counters the low-slung seating with its vertical form.

Custom Kitchen as the Heart of the Home

The kitchen, developed across four walls, is a seamless blend of artisan detail and contemporary functionality. Painted in a deep matte petrol green by Italian craftsmen in Turin, the cabinetry sets a luxurious tone. Bespoke terrazzo countertops and backsplashes, manufactured in Verona, add texture and depth with their vibrant aggregate composition. Above, orange pendant lights twist like knotted ribbons, infusing the room with a sense of warmth and buoyancy.

Layered Palette and Timeless Details

The deep blue paneling that wraps the parlor floor creates continuity across the home while toning down natural light to evoke a calm, serene atmosphere. It also frames the discreet entry into the powder room, where moody wallpaper, spherical lighting, and a quirky mirror create a whimsical, suspended ambiance.

In the master bedroom, exposed brick walls reclaim their rightful spotlight. Paired with softly rounded furnishings and custom Valchromat nightstands, the room balances historical texture with contemporary softness, emphasizing rest and retreat.

Material Harmony and Expressive Living

Throughout the residence, Olbos Studio demonstrates a masterful balance between luxurious and humble materials. Stone, metal, terrazzo, and Valchromat interact with vibrant colors to reflect the homeowners’ bold personalities. The design embraces contrasts—gritty and refined, historical and modern, playful and serene—creating a living environment that is both deeply personal and architecturally resonant.
