Bermagui Beach House by Winter Architecture – A Contemporary Coastal Retreat in Australia

Bermagui Beach House, designed by Winter Architecture, is a striking clifftop residence located in Bermagui, Australia, overlooking the town’s iconic Blue Pools. Completed in 2021, this 348 m² coastal home is a modern reinterpretation of the classic Australian beach house, designed with sensitivity to its environment and the family’s long-standing connection to the site.

The new beach house replaces a beloved weatherboard shack, which was carefully relocated nearby to make way for this next chapter. With thoughtful design, the home balances privacy, openness, and connection to nature, redefining what contemporary coastal living in Australia can be.

Inspired by Coastal Surroundings

Winter Architecture’s design is deeply influenced by the rugged coastal landscape of Bermagui. The home is arranged as three solid volumes wrapped in a timber skin, strategically positioned near the rear boundary to engage directly with the garden and open vistas of the ocean.

The architecture embraces a dialogue between indoors and outdoors, allowing natural light, sea breezes, and layered landscaping to shape the living experience. Peripheral outdoor spaces are intentionally designed to provide both sun-drenched areas and sheltered courtyards, ensuring the home adapts seamlessly to coastal climates.

A Pavilion-Like Layout for Flexibility

The house is composed of three interconnected pavilions:

• The living pavilion anchors the northern point of the site, connecting to the main pavilion and guest pavilion via a glazed link.
• Guest sleeping areas and dining spaces open to protected courtyards on the lower level, ideal for gatherings.
• Flexible upper-level living areas allow residents to open up to ocean views or retreat into private sanctuaries.

This layout ensures the home comfortably accommodates both hosts and guests, encouraging communal living while offering spaces of solitude when needed.

Materiality and Atmosphere

Materials for Bermagui Beach House were chosen to reflect the raw beauty of its natural environment:

• Exterior: Weathered timber cladding paired with dune-inspired landscaping, blending seamlessly into the coastal setting.
• Interior: A minimalist palette of white walls, sandy tones, tactile timbers, and robust brickwork, echoing the textures of rock pools, beaches, and cliffs.

Every detail is designed for a barefoot lifestyle, inviting occupants to connect with their surroundings in a simple, restorative way.

While the home engages openly with the landscape, its layout ensures privacy for the family. Carefully proportioned openings, sliding timber screens, and layered facades create a relaxed yet refined coastal aesthetic.
