Community Center Langen bei Bregenz – A Layered Transformation by MWArchitekten
A sustainable community center revitalized through phased renovation, adding a new attic level, improved accessibility, and warm wood interiors for public use.
The Community Center in Langen bei Bregenz stands as a renewed architectural anchor for this Austrian municipality, thoughtfully reimagined by MWArchitekten. Completed in 2025, the 800 m² project demonstrates how existing civic buildings can be sustainably transformed through careful phasing, minimal land use, and a clear design vision focused on community needs, accessibility, and long-term adaptability.

A Phased Redevelopment Strategy Focused on Preservation and Sustainability
Rather than expanding outward or consuming new land, MWArchitekten pursued a phased restructuring strategy that revitalizes the existing center from within. The goal: strengthen the heart of the village while preserving the surrounding landscape.
The first phase began with the kindergarten extension, seamlessly integrated into the original structure through sensitive conversion. This approach maximized spatial efficiency and minimized environmental impact, setting a precedent for subsequent interventions.
The redevelopment journey concludes with two key programmatic shifts:
- The relocation of the local music club into a newly created attic level
- The comprehensive conversion and modernization of the community center
Together, these upgrades bring new life to the building, expanding its social and cultural functions while maintaining the familiar footprint valued by residents.

Vertical Expansion Through Structural Ingenuity
One of the project’s most distinctive architectural moves is the extension of the roof by one additional storey. This vertical strategy avoids land consumption and enhances the building’s presence within the village skyline.
To make this possible, the architects employed engineered trusses that span the width of the existing structure. These trusses not only enable the new attic-level program but also become expressive interior elements, revealing the construction logic and adding material warmth to the spaces within.

A Dialogue Between Old and New
The community center’s refurbishment is defined by the contrast between the original façade and the new upper storey. The added volume is intentionally abstracted—cleaner, more minimal, visually lighter—creating a contemporary counterpoint to the renovated lower levels.
This dialogue reinforces the building’s identity as a place with history, now equipped for the needs of a growing and evolving community.

Barrier-Free Access and Improved Social Spaces
A central goal of the transformation is enhanced accessibility and community functionality. The conversion introduces:
- Barrier-free access throughout the building
- An expanded meeting room, supporting larger gatherings and civic events
- Upgraded interior materials, particularly warm wood finishes, that promote a welcoming atmosphere
The result is a community center that is inclusive, flexible, and attuned to contemporary standards of public architecture.

An Evolved Civic Hub for Langen bei Bregenz
With its strategic layering of extensions, conversions, and spatial reorganizations, the Community Center Langen bei Bregenz reflects a forward-looking model for municipal architecture. MWArchitekten’s approach demonstrates how thoughtful design can:
- Revitalize existing buildings
- Strengthen community identity
- Support sustainable development
- Expand functionality without expanding land use
