Discover Urban Chic: Edition Office Unveils Fenwick St's, Architectural Marvel
Is Fenwick St by Edition Office Redefining Modern Architecture with its Unparalleled Urban Charm?

Nestled on the picturesque edge of the Birrarung/Yarra River in Australia, the Fenwick St project designed by Edition Office is a breathtaking exemplar of urban architecture. Adjacent to the serene Yarra Bend Park, the site offers unparalleled northern vistas, stretching from the immediate river views to the expansive horizon in the north, providing a rare connection to nature in close proximity to the city.
The strategic location of the site also places it amidst a cluster of well-preserved 1950s and 1960s post-war houses, meandering athletically across the sloping terrain by the river. Edition Office's challenge was to ensure that this breathtaking connection to the landscape remains preserved, weaving the design deep into the plan while maintaining visual porosity.
To achieve this delicate balance, the architects opted for three visually independent pavilions instead of a single massive structure. These pavilions, linked by a shared basement, allow for a harmonious blend with the neighbouring houses while providing unobstructed views and connections to the immediate green spaces surrounding them. By thoughtfully reframing and embracing the vistas through the site, the pavilions seamlessly integrate into the landscape, becoming a part of the natural surroundings.
Positioned at a sharp bend in the street, the split between the pavilions occurs at the fulcrum, where one pivots past the site. This arrangement enables the structures to harmonize with the terrain, lowering the scale at the street level to align with the residential neighbours and gradually increasing in height as they descend towards the escarpment.
The architects' meticulous attention to detail extended to the interior spaces, ensuring a seamless flow between the private areas and the breathtaking landscape. Collaborating with Flack Studio, the design team brought a sense of warmth and calm into the interiors, using material tactility and evolving patina to evoke a delightful sense of connection with the surroundings.
The copper screening, weathering gracefully over time, adds a touch of delicacy to the robust pre-cast concrete construction. Inside, light-filled spaces exude comfort and elegance, while carefully crafted junctions and interplay of materials create a sense of joy in navigation throughout the dwellings.
With a brief calling for nine new dwellings on a site that previously housed only one, the Fenwick St project is a testament to thoughtful design in an area of immense environmental and cultural significance. Embracing the natural contours of the land, the buildings appear modest in scale, seamlessly blending with the existing streetscape.
The striking wedge-like forms of the pavilions come together in a moment of architectural exuberance, extending away from the densely planted centre to offer unobstructed sightlines between and through to the distant horizon.
