A Boutique Hotel with a Vision

Rather than simply adding more rooms to the market, Hotel El Zarzo introduces a unique concept: a small-scale urban oasis where attention to detail and a warm, welcoming atmosphere take center stage. Nestled among other nationally and internationally recognized hotels, the project sets itself apart through its intimate scale, with only a few rooms designed to maximize comfort, privacy, and personalized experiences.

Thoughtful Design Across Seven Levels

Spanning seven levels over 1,114 m², Hotel El Zarzo is carefully structured to optimize both functionality and guest experience:

  • Basement: Dedicated to technical and service requirements.
  • First Level: Features a public restaurant and lobby, welcoming both guests and local visitors.
  • Four Levels of Rooms: Each room is strategically positioned to enjoy natural light and ventilation from the eastern and western facades.
  • Rooftop Terrace: Home to a vintage-inspired bar with a retractable fabric pergola, adaptable for different weather conditions and events.

By placing elevators, stairs, and service areas against the party walls, the architects ensured that each room maintains a direct connection to the exterior, offering stunning views of the city, lush gardens, and distant mountains.

A Facade That Frames Views and Life

The building’s design celebrates variation and rhythm. Each level features unique window compositions, incorporating arches and porticos that enhance interior spatial quality while framing greenery and urban vistas. The facade becomes not just a protective shell but a lens connecting guests with Medellín’s urban and natural landscape.

Sustainability and Integration with Nature

Hotel El Zarzo emphasizes environmentally conscious design. Vegetation is carefully integrated throughout, with terraces and slabs hosting over a hundred tropical species. A programmed drip irrigation system ensures rational and efficient water usage, supporting a small urban ecosystem.

The strategic use of natural materials and vegetation also enhances thermal comfort, reducing reliance on air conditioning and minimizing the building’s carbon footprint. This thoughtful approach positions the hotel as a model for sustainable urban hospitality in Medellín.

A Project for the City

Beyond its role as a boutique hotel, Hotel El Zarzo contributes to the city’s social and ecological fabric. Publicly accessible spaces such as the ground-floor restaurant and rooftop bar invite residents and tourists alike to enjoy the architecture, greenery, and city views. Through this project, ALH Taller de Arquitectura demonstrates how modern hospitality can merge design excellence with environmental stewardship, setting a benchmark for future urban interventions in Colombia.
