Huimanguillo Market: A Modern Architectural Transformation by 128 Arquitectura y Diseño Urbano
Huimanguillo Market blends modern and traditional architecture, featuring passive cooling, vaulted concrete shells, and urban integration for a sustainable marketplace.
The Huimanguillo Market, designed by 128 Arquitectura y Diseño Urbano, stands as a striking example of contemporary market architecture in Huimanguillo, Mexico. This revitalized marketplace, part of the federal government's Urban Improvement Program, integrates modern materials, passive design strategies, and urban connectivity to create a more functional and sustainable commercial hub.

Revitalizing a Historic Market Space
Located in Tabasco's largest municipality, Huimanguillo Market occupies a strategic urban block near the town's transportation hub. The project replaces the aging market, which had suffered from severe structural damage due to high humidity levels reaching 95%. The deteriorating infrastructure posed a risk to vendors and visitors, necessitating a complete redesign.

Architectural and Urban Design Concept
The new market design adheres to the original commercial layout, ensuring minimal disruption to long-standing business operations. A rectangular central courtyard divides the structure into two blocks of commercial spaces, promoting natural light and ventilation. The roof features a series of vaulted concrete shells, an innovative structural system that enhances durability while echoing the region’s architectural heritage.
The use of naturally pigmented concrete throughout the market’s exterior reflects the warm hues of Tabasco’s vernacular architecture. The perimeter incorporates exposed brick latticework, providing shading, privacy, and ventilation while forming an inviting, semi-transparent facade. This passive cooling strategy reduces energy consumption, improving thermal comfort within the marketplace.

Urban Integration and Sustainability
Beyond the marketplace itself, the project enhances urban connectivity. A commercial corridor on the southern side features a newly integrated vegetal canopy and urban furniture, offering shaded public spaces that improve pedestrian circulation. The eastern portion of the complex houses technical rooms, service areas, and loading docks, optimizing logistics and functionality.
A Market Built to Last
By blending traditional materials with modern construction techniques, Huimanguillo Market ensures a longer lifespan while celebrating local architectural identity. The combination of exposed brick, concrete, and natural ventilation systems reinforces the market’s durability against the region’s extreme humidity.
This project exemplifies how adaptive reuse and sustainable architecture can redefine public spaces, fostering community engagement while enhancing economic vitality.
