Restoring the Majesty of Suzhou’s Iconic Lion Mountain

Lion Mountain Park in Suzhou, China, is a remarkable example of landscape restoration and urban renewal. Designed by TLS Landscape Architecture, this ambitious project transforms a historically significant yet neglected natural landmark into a thriving cultural and ecological destination. Covering an expansive 850,000 square meters, the park reestablishes Lion Mountain as a focal point of Suzhou’s landscape, blending modern sustainability principles with deep-rooted cultural heritage.

A Historic Site Reimagined

For centuries, Lion Mountain has stood as a guardian of Suzhou, overlooking the city alongside its counterpart, Tiger Mountain. Once celebrated in ancient poetry and stone carvings, its grandeur had been obscured by an outdated amusement park, excessive billboards, and a deteriorating lake. In 2016, TLS Landscape Architecture won an international competition to restore this iconic site. After nine years of meticulous planning and development, the park now offers a harmonious blend of nature, recreation, and culture.

An Ecological and Social Revival

At the heart of the transformation is the revitalization of the lake, which now serves as both a scenic and ecological asset. Wetland terraces and cypress forests filter urban runoff, improving water quality to a standard safe for human interaction. This enhancement has facilitated a vibrant small boat program, replacing the once-declining amusement park with a dynamic social space.

The Great Circular Promenade

A defining feature of Lion Mountain Park is its 2-kilometer circular promenade, seamlessly linking the mountain, lake, and urban fabric. This pathway integrates 18 newly curated narrative "scenes", inspired by historical inscriptions, forming a cultural and environmental anchor for the surrounding development. Visitors can explore thematic landscapes, enjoy serene waterfront views, and engage with interactive installations.

A Cultural Hub: Integrating Architecture and Public Space

The park is not just a natural retreat—it is a hub for art, education, and performance. A new cultural district complements the landscape, featuring:

  • The Science Museum by Perkins and Will
  • A Civic Theater designed by SANAA
  • A satellite branch of the Suzhou Museum by GMP

These institutions are easily accessible via a new underground subway station, where visitors emerge through a beautifully designed "Canyon Garden" with cascading fountains, leading directly to the promenade.

Sustainability and Conservation Efforts

Environmental stewardship is a core principle of the project. The forested slopes of Lion Mountain have been preserved, while newly designated ecological zones on the western side support biodiversity. Carefully planned pathways weave through natural rock formations and dense woodlands, offering immersive nature trails, bamboo mazes, and children’s play areas.

Music and Art: A Sensory Experience

The artistic identity of Lion Mountain Park is further enriched by its music program. A modern forest meditation composition by Yifang Han fills a pavilion along the promenade, while a unique installation by the Kronos Quartet and renowned Pipa player Wu Man integrates the sounds of the former amusement park into a nostalgic yet contemporary piece. This blend of sound and space enhances the sensory experience of the park, creating a deeply engaging atmosphere.

A Model for Urban Landscape Design

The revitalization of Lion Mountain Park sets a new benchmark for sustainable landscape architecture, cultural preservation, and urban resilience. By restoring the mountain’s natural beauty, integrating ecological principles, and fostering a renewed sense of community, TLS Landscape Architecture has successfully redefined this Suzhou landmark for future generations.
