Maree House by Circle Studio Architects
Maree House by Circle Studio Architects blends warmth, color, and flow with a lap pool centerpiece and seamless indoor-outdoor connection.
Designed by Circle Studio Architects, the Maree House in Yarraville, Australia, is a thoughtful architectural expression of warmth, individuality, and balance between family life and contemporary aesthetics. Created for a local doctor and her family, the design focuses on zoned living, seamless indoor-outdoor connection, and vibrant, characterful interiorsthat reflect the family’s unique

Design Concept & Layout
The client’s dream of a home that accommodates both functionality and beauty comes alive through carefully curated spaces. The long block was chosen for its potential to host a lap pool, making it a central feature of the residence. The architects ensured that the pool is visually integrated with the interiors while remaining functionally accessible for daily swims.

Every room is designed with large windows framing garden views, ensuring that nature remains a constant presence. The home’s layout embraces backyards, courtyards, and balconies to strengthen the connection between inside and out, creating a soothing sense of openness.

Architectural Aesthetic & Material Palette
Externally, Maree House fits effortlessly within the Yarraville streetscape. The white brick façade and painted battensbring a tactile quality, while the timber-lined entry introduces warmth. The pop of blue at the main door and soft pink accents throughout—especially the spiral staircase and joinery—add an element of playfulness.

The architects skillfully blend color and texture to break away from neutral monotony. Inside, the front lounge is dark and moody, offering contrast to the bright, airy library filled with natural light. The continuity of materials—like spotted gum cladding, terrazzo, and crazy paving—creates a visual rhythm that flows from exterior to interior.

Interior Experience & Spatial Zoning
The home’s layout encourages both privacy and connection. The central circulation divides ‘tidy’ living areas from ‘untidy,’ concealable spaces, promoting both order and comfort. Each family member enjoys a private zone that can be closed off when needed, while communal areas remain open and welcoming.

A pink spiral staircase connects the upper play area and balcony to a shaded courtyard below, adding both visual and functional charm. The pool, a key feature, is structurally independent but integrated visually through clever engineering—the house slab cantilevers over the pool shell, finished with curved terrazzo and mosaic tiles for a seamless junction.

Sustainability & Structural Considerations
Originally intended as an extension to a weatherboard cottage, the design evolved into a new build after realizing the thermal and spatial inefficiencies of renovation. The new structure enhances solar access, improves thermal performance, and minimizes the impact on neighboring homes. The centralized upper floor ensures light reaches adjacent properties, while setbacks create breathing room and privacy.

A Home with Heart
Every detail of Maree House reflects collaboration and understanding between the architect and the client. From its vibrant interiors to its organic flow, the house celebrates everyday life through design that feels intimate, playful, and deeply personal. It’s a perfect balance of functionality, warmth, and artistic expression—a home that feels truly lived in.
